I have only been aware of him since the Hatton fight. It is un-believable he is only 20. He had around 20 Amateur bouts before turning Pro at 15 and had the fights he's had.

Recently I have sought out a few of his past fights and ben swatting up on him and I really do think he can become one of the Mexican lagends.

I really enjoy watching these type of fighters. Chavez, Oscar, even Chavez Jr more recently is not the fighter I dismissed only a few years ago.

Hopefully he will continue to improve and to learn, and go on to achieve great things.

The next Fernando Vargas I'd say. Charisma and the Mexican public just love him.

I think he's definitely got the chance to be the next Oscar.

I saw him on the undercard of PBF v Mosley fight against Cotto's brother and his improvement since then is astounding.

For 20 it's incredible. He fought like a veteran

When you compare him with the joke career of Chavez Jr it's insane. Arum is a disgrace.

Vargas looked very similar at that age: a young world champion who was clinically outboxing the likes of Ike Quartey - it seemed like the world was his oyster. It was only after Trinidad pretty much destroyed him that we realised he was not maybe quite as good as most people thought.
I just hope goldenboy don't make the same type of mistake, by matching Canelo with Manny Pac.

yep good point. Definitely no need for Alvarez to face the likes of Manny or Floyd now, he's got superfights ahead of him, there's loads of really big contests in between.

He is better at 20 then Chavez or Hoya were but unlike them i don't see him winning multiple weight titles. He is already too big to make Welterweight again without draining himself too much to make 147 lbs and he just dosen't seem big enough to compete successfully at the 160 Middleweight limit.

If he spends his whole career at 154 lbs then he could easily make 10-15 defences and be a unified belt holder at the weight as he would easily beat Cotto and K-9 although Sergei Dziniruk could be too early for him.

I like the way he's improving and was much more composed and picked his shots much better against Rhodes then he did against Hatton so look forward to seeing much more of him over the next few years.

I've seen his last 7-8 fights. The kid is class.

He seems to really be working on and sorting out his leaky defence as well.

Great for boxing to have a huge Mexican star. Also good for Britain that he has boxed two guys from here so early as he has already made a name in Britain

Alvarez will not be spending his whole career @ 154lbs, that's for sure! He looked at least a division bigger than Rhodes in the Ring, & Ryan is by no means a Small LMW. I'd say Alvarez is draining himself to make 154lbs & by next year he'll have no choice bu to move up to 160lbs. However, a guy like Sergio Martinez, even though he's 36, will be too strong & hit too hard for him.

Alvarez displayed maturity beyond his 20 years, but I still say a guy like Cotto beats him.

He's a class boxer, very strong and works behind his stiff jab to unleash hurtful combinations. Lots of potential!!

Reminds me of Cotto when I see him fight. Reminds me alot of Cotto coming through also. Definately has the wow factor when you consider his age.

Nope he aint all that, in fact I think that the first decent black guy he fights will chin him.

He fights at a slow pace and some rangey speedster is gonna fuking own him at some point.

totally agree with jon saxon.

he's no chavez or de lay hoya. sure he's 20 but otherwise he reminds me of one of those strong middleweight argentinians who used to spring up with great records. the fact this guy is a mexican means several things. he will have great heart and a good left hook to the liver. but this kid is freakishly strong at 154 albeit in a weak division. ryan rhodes was an old man and hatton made alvarez look bad and have to work hard every round. in fact had hatton had his brothers equivalent power at the weight and been a legit 154 pounder the fight would have been close.

i think alvarez has a long long way to go. the 154 ranks dont have men like mccallum, norris,jackson or tito trinidad anymore. its a weak weak division.

There are no longer the great black american atheletes at 154-160 we used to see.

That said if mike jones improves and goes up he could expose alvarez.

Id love to see kell brook get some good work in the next 18 months and step up and beat alvarez
i think talent wise he is on vargas's level its just he is fighting at a weaker era than vargas.

To put things into perspective, though, he was facing someone who was gun-shy after receiving fire. Rhodes didn't test Alvarez's defence very much.

Alvarez was in 2nd gear until the 12th. He carried Ryan Rhodes ffs! That alone says something about the kid.

lol at the hype surrounding this guy. MightyWarrior has it right as usual, although in terms of ability I'm not even sure Alvarez is the next Vargas. I would say Canelo is a Jeff Lacy level all hype no substance fighter. He'll be good enough to win a paper title and defend it a few times but he doesn't have enough to mix it with the elite.
