I'd say no. I remember early on in his career he turned down much bigger paydays to maintain control over his career. Control over his destiny always seemed more important. He's a guy that seems to enjoy a fight, but fights smart when outsized. I think he'll be feeling very empty at the moment and all the money he's made won't make that feeling go away. I would bet my house he won't be retiring on October as there's no way he'd want to go out like that.

I'm glad you think that he won't be happy looking like a guy who run away for twelve rounds...

i did :DD

i said he'd adopt valuev tactics & he even gave ground to fraudley & that he aint no jack dempsey/tyson which is needed to beat wlad.

the only small heavy to outbox the big guys was chris byrd & even he came unstuck. hayes style is wrong against wlad. haye cant roll punches & fight in close he never has.his defences aint cut out for it.

Possibly

He was an amateur for some time.

When that "Hayemaker" Promotions thing was created then yes I would say his perspective changed to money - but only because he had to.

On Talksport this morning, Haye said all the trash talk, the predictions of taking wlads head off, vitali escorting wlad in an ambulance after the fight etc etc...this was purely to promote the fight and sell it, getting more PPV buys.

Haye is a joke. I feel he knew deep down he had little or no chance of beating Wlad, but was just happy to basically con the british public, and collect a big fat cheque. Look at the last 3 or 4 rounds....Haye knew he needed a KO to win, but his tactics (or lack of) never changed at all. Where was the urgency to KO the big man, or even attempt to? He just kept backing off and backing off and almost seemed 'proud' to say he 'only' lost to Wlad on points!

Even after the fight, both him and Booth looked like they could'nt give a toss. There both great salesmen and both seemed like all they cared about was the massive pay-day! And then Booth states a rematch with Wlad is out of the question, all because Haye no longer holds a title and brings less to the table, meaning a smaller purse!? I mean, come on.....where's the ambition to try and win back the World Heavweight Title, even if it means getting less money than Wlad!? How much money does Haye really need?!

Haye is a complete embarassment to the sport. Motivated entirely by money.

I think Haye always planned to win titles at cruiser, move to heavy and cash out.

He must have known he was a little too small for heavyweight, so he spent most of his time in the lower weights where his physical advantages counted, then moved up, but made sure he didn't face any young hungry dangermen, so his train wasn't derailed. Then, he finally landed the big one, and got the massive payday.

Can't blame him for maximising his earnings, but he won't be remembered as anything approaching a great fighter. Hey, I wouldn't mind his money.

True James.

On his way up, money, I feel, was secondary to winning and learning.

As time has gone on, wife, kids, again I feel, his priorities have shifted.

Can't blame him for that. but if I am honest, and I usually am, I feel about 2-3 rounds he thought, 'I can't win this, but I am not getting KO'd and I get 10-15mill (whatever it was), regardless'.

Again, can't blame him for that but it was disappointing, not so much the hype but considering how he used to fight and 'go for it', to a meek and defensive defeat like that.

Of course not.

You cannot say that Haye took up boxing as an amateur just to make money. He took it up because he had a talent and enjoyed it. When he became a pro then of course it is more about money otherwise he would have just stayed an amateur but to say that was his only motivation is bollocks.

When he became a Cruiserweight champ and saw a poor heavyweight division then obviously he saw the pound signs but not for one second do I believe that he was solely just thinking about the money. I honestly believe he thought he had a chance of beating the Klitschko's and that the money was not the one single over riding factor.

Yes he's made money, and deservedly so, but to say that his only motivation has always been money is utter crap.

His performance Saturday night was poor but do you honestly believe that off camera he doesn't give a fornicate and that he is just sat smugly at home checking out his bank balance? Of course not.

he brands himself & gets a clothing line even before he's a world champion.he goes on every show on tv & repeatedly on soccer am.
he opens an app game on the eve of his fight & cuts a deal with football kit suppliers while doing a chat show in the run up to this fight.

CB, Haye's main motivation was money in this fight, theres no denying that! He admitted himself everything he said before the fight was purely to sell the fight and get more money. Did you really believe that Haye honestly thought he was seriously going to KO a proven top class Heavyweight champion, especially as his only previous wins at the weight included wins against the great Monte Barrett, the worst-ever 'world champ' in Valuev, a near 40 year old Ruiz (who himself got beat by Valuev twice) and Fraudley Harrison!?

He was looking to get in there, play it safe, avoid getting hurt, and collect his £15m.

And yes, I really do honestly believe thats he now sat at home, smiling to himself, checking his bank balance.

I don't think he is only motivated by money no. He could have just gone down in a few rounds if he was.

It's clearly important to him - who isn't it important to? - but he could have put up much less of a show on Saturday night. He was still trying to take Wlad out in the last round and Wlad knew that.

He could also have probably gotten away with defending the title in the UK by hyping 'nothing' fights of the Audley Harrison mould for a good while longer, whilst calling out the Klits from afar.

I'm not saying he was looking to lose the fight. No-one goes to the ring hoping to lose! But the £15million was probably on his mind during the 12 rounds, along with trying to avoid getting his face too badly disfigured ready for his acting career when he retires.

"Clearly important to him"??? It sure didnt look like that throughout the fight!

He conned the british public in selling the Audley fight, and now has done the same with Wlad.

He's said for a few years now, both him and Booth, constantly saying he's gonna retire in October.....and now he says he wont!?

The British public won't take this man serious again. Everything that comes out his mouth is utter garbage.

Surely that is the major factor in prizefighting, yes there's glory, the legacy you may leave but the crux of it is you make as much fornicating money as you can without getting much mental harm if you have any sense.

Quite right. Eubank never had any qualms about saying he did it for the money and there's no shortage of respect for him on here.

Fighter says he will retire and doesn't. In other news a bear goes for dump in an area densely populated with trees.

I'm sure the money was a massive motivation to him for this fight but do you not believe that the chance to beat Wlad, take his belts and be considered one of the best Heavyweights in the world played no part in his motivation at all? Why did he bother training then? Why not just go in overweight and unfit as if thought he had absolutely no chance of winning why put himself through it? You can't tell me it was all just one big ploy to blag the general public to buy the fight and he honestly didn't have any self belief that he could win this fight at all? Come on.

Also, the OP asked whether Haye is only motivated by money. Not was his only motivation for this fight money. Again do you believe that throughout his career his single factor was just solely money and he had no ambition, drive to prove himself, be the best etc.

As with pretty much all professional sportsmen their shelf life is relatively short so of course they are going to try and make as much money as they can but I honestly don't believe that, that can be a boxers sole motivation.

In that case why do journey men do what they do for relatively little money?

If Haye earned £15k for Saturday's fight and had agreed to give half of that to charity would he be receiving any criticism? Doubt it, therefore criticism of him is motivated by money.
Alot of people love a person who grafts hard for pittance and hate a person who seems to be earning more than he deserves. I say fair effing play to him.
