THIS WOULD HAD BEEN A DIFFERENT HISTORY MAYBE. SCHEDULED FOR 15 ROUNDS THIS TIME HAGLER BY DESICION OR BY TKO IN 14 ROUNDS.

Hagler was too much man for any MW in the world in 82, and Leonard, though game, would have proven himself no exception.

Hagler by decision.

Hagler was a bit sharper, used a bit more movement. Leonard himself indicated that he fought Hagler in '87 because, watching the Mugabi fight, he felt that Hagler had slipped and would be easier to hit. Now, Leonard in '82 was also closer to his peak, but I think the difference between '87 Hagler and '82 Hagler is greater than Leonard's situation, despite (or perhaps because of) Leonard's inactivity. It would still be competitive, but if Hagler barely loses in '87 then he probably wins close in '82.

I think Leonard would have given a good account of himself, but it would have probably been asking too much of him to beat one of the greatest MWs of all-time who was at his peak.

I can see Leonard frustrating Hagler at times; plus add in the fact that Hagler often tended to give too much respect to his celebrated opponents (Hearns excepted), would probably have meant a close fight.

Hagler would really bruise him at close-range though, making Leonard shy down the stretch.

This would had been a 15 round fight. Not a 12 round fight.

I still think it would have been close.

Both men had great stamina.

Leonard was dead tired in fights against Benitez & Hearns, yet he rallied back to stop them late on.

Over 15 rounds in 82 I don't see Ray going the distance.

I don't think he would have lasted 15 when they fought.

If I remember right, Leonard negotiated to make the fight 12 instead of 15. I picked Leonard to win based on styles, and knew they both had heart. I won big (two cases of beer, lol). I do think a few years earlier Hagler would have won, but then again I doubt if SRL would have fought him at 160, and would have wanted Hagler to cut. Prime Hagler would have destroyed S. Martinez I think.

Yes, you're right, he did negotiate the 1987 fight to be over 12 instead of 15 & I can't really blame him.

He was out of action for years; plus, how could the fight have been over 15, when 15 round fights had ceased by then anyway? :-?

Leonard got choice of gloves, a massive ring and 12 rds. How he managed to get all of that will always be puzzling to me. I suppose Hagler just agreed to whatever thinking he would steamroll the smaller man coming off a 3 year hiatus. In addition it was by far Haglers biggest purse at 12 mil I think.

Why Hagler came out as a right hander right off the get go is frankly beyond belief. He literally gave away the first two rounds and then was forced to play catchup which fell right into Leonards hands with that big ring. Leonards legs were gone in the 12th. Had it been 15....

I've probably scored this fight 50 times over the course of my life and the best I can come up with is a draw in which case Hagler would have retained his title.

Hagler always felt like he should have received the acclaim that Leonard always did. He would have done anything to get him in the ring. I think that's also why he made the tactical error of trying to out-box him early and practically giving away the opening rounds.

As for leonard's layoff, impressive as it was, they brought in pro's from outside of camp for real fights. So he had a few fights, they just weren't sanctioned.

Actually the IBF still had 17 rounds fights. in 1987 but was for the wbc title In any case in the mexican news said it was a fixed fight is you see hagler looks only to throw punches without real power behind it.

With posts like that you are certainly in the right forum, brother.

Leonard outpsyched Hagler.

Hagler spent the first 4 rounds cursing Leonard & trying to prove that he was the 'man' rather than getting on & winning the fight.

By the time he realised he needed to start scoring some points, he was behind & also, by 1987, he was slower than an arthritic snail & was too slow to cope with Leonard's tactics.

Hagler would win by decision, thoroughly beating Leonard as the fight progresses.

15 rounders hadn't ceased. Brown/Trice fought a 15-round title fight over a year later. Barkley/Kalambay was over 15 in October 87. They hadn't ceased.

Wasn't that in exchange for Hagler's receipt of the larger share of the pot?
