It is my understanding that the EBU state a boxer cannot fight for their title coming off a loss.
When is this fight going to take place I wonder ?

Good one from Warren Degale will beat this guy without too much trouble i know he lost his last fight, but that was from his own stupidity i think he will look very impressive here

Michael Sprott is fighting for the EBU title next, and thats coming off a loss aswell or dont they count the prizefighter ?

No, whilst it would make sense - it doesn't work like that. Paulo Vidoz speaks to mind, Matt Skelton also.

It's the reason the European title isn't on the line in Murray/Mitchell.

Its a good rule that they have. Degale will probs box in a daft 8x3s aginst a Spanish waiter then take this fight.

Seriously, I think it is the rule.
I think Dougie has got it right, in that there will be a "run out" for DeGale with an inevitable outcome before this fight happens.

Warren next show is the 16th as this weeks is cancelled when can he have a run out before 17th Sept?

Voluntary defenses don't count with the loss rule i think If a boxer is nominated to box for the title by the EBU, or is a EBU champion and losses in a non-ebu title fight (e.g. world championship fight, or warm-up) , then they either lose the nominated status or the EBU title if they are a holder. And therefore cannot box for the title until they get a win.

If a EBU belt holder wants to do a voluntary defense then this isn't a nominated fight by the EBU, therefore a challanger can come into the fight off a loss.

I've just read through their rules and there is nothing in it about the challenger not being allowed to come off a loss, but that seemed at odds with reports at the time of the Booth-Martinez fight as it was reported that Rendall Munroe was unable to fight for the title as he was coming off a loss to Toshiaki Nishioka.

The opponent in a voluntary defence simply has to be ratified by the EBU council (and meet their minimum criteria). Munroe seems to have been scuppered by a combination of rules 13.1 (A European Champion shall lose his title in the following ways - 13.1. If he is beaten in a contest within the limit of the division.) and 13.12 (If the Champion has lost his title for one of these reasons, the highest rated boxer in the current Ratings, after the Official Challenger who confirms acceptance of the position will be appointed challenger to meet him in a contest for the vacant title.). Martinez was the Official Challenger at the time Munroe lost to Nishioka; Booth was the highest rated boxer to accept the position. Fair enough.

Well it cannot be a hard rule then, the example I mentioned fought for the EBU title after a loss..... VIdoz did it several times.

Very impressive matchmaking. Had DeGale won the fight against Groves I would have expected this fight to have been made, so to get a Euro shot off the back of a loss (albeit a close one) will get Degale back in the mix pretty much straight away.

If he wins this he gets a decent World ranking again so it is impressive matchmaking.

Fair play to the promoter for arranging this one. I picked Groves to win a close fight, but have nothing against Degale who is a decent all rounder fighter.

Never heard of this fella though and not remotely excited about the bout at all.

I think the EBU afford a decent WBC ranking, which will likely be held by Froch or Ward by the beginning of 2012. But unlikely Degale would fight either of those just yet as he learns his trade a bit more and bides his time.

With this happening who next for Groves? The Polish guy will sell the tickets as cant see Degale selling many. This be on another Warren PPV show where the bill falls apart. Mitchell v Murray will be on there when it falls apart next week.

The ebu reversed that rule at their convention a few weeks back.

Great matchmaking, really spot on. De Gale will still reach world level and compete for world titles. Hope for the same for Groves, but not so sure it will turn out like that. And they said football was a funny old game!
