Not sure, but I think that James "Bonecrusher" Smith never fought amateur.

He had a few amateur fights whilst in the army, he turned pro late though (aged 28)

Tarver won an Olympic medal, mate, & a Pan-American Gold & Gold at the World Championships, I think four years before the Olympic, so it's probable that he had more than a "few" amateur fights.

I remember being told that Bernard Hopkins didn't have any amteur fights...
But he did.
