Ovil McKenzie apparantly schooled badly in sparing

Im told at the gym tonight that Ovil McKenzie was toyed with and made to look rather stupid in sparring by an Ex pro and current sparring partner of Carl Froch , Gary Mayor .
This information has come indirectly from Gary himself ( he told someone else but i was earwigging)
It was apparantly to such an extent that McKenzies team banned Gary as it was considered demoralising to him .
Now dont get me wrong Gary is good , in fact hes imo world class (story for another time maybe from someone) , but surely this would be bad news for Ovil in the build up to such a big fight for him
Good news for tony though .

Gary Mayor is an Animal. He normally gets the better of Frochy for the first couple of rounds.

Just tried to look up his record on here , dont seem to be able to find him , did he actually go pro ? i always have been told he was pro , but looked at aba roll of honour , he won 70kg class b in 1991 , no idea what that means as i dont follow amateur boxing , but considering he served around 15 years and hes been out around 3 or 4 years , it doesnt leave much time does it ?
I can only assume he never actually went pro , contrary to what ive always been told by people .
edit :searched the first 10 pages of google and found nothing , im sure someone on here will know all about him , but if he was never pro then its even more of a waste of talent than i already thought as the guy is quality even though hes now in his early to mid 30s if he turned pro today id expect him to be british light heavy champ within a year .

I can't believe that despite mountains of evidence to the contrary, people still believe that what happens in sparring will have a direct correllation to the fight. Whether it's reports of Eubank being 'owned' by Tony Collins, or Haye 'destroying' sparring partners in the run-up to the VK fight, anyone who posts on here should know enough to know that this type of 'inside info' is more often than not misleading in the context of trying to determine the outcome of a fight.

Gary Mayo/Mayor is basically a gym fighter. If/when he does go pro (in doubt cos of his M sentence) he will get battered within ten fights.

I spoke to him once Damian and he got a pro license but never any fights. It got suspended following that incident. Gym fighters a bit harsh I believe. Think he beat nasseem as an amateur too. Get him on one of your shows danmian

Why is it harsh? He hasn't had a match for the best part of 20 years.
Exactly. It appears that he only fights as a sparring partner for pros, thus he is a gym fighter.

already entered my mind mate

, although from what im told he wouldnt be interested as hes waiting for his probation period to finish before re applying to go pro , so im told , ive only had passing conversation with him about his sparring with froch so dont really know him well enough to hold any swing over him to get him on one of my shows , unfortunately , if i knew him better maybe i could persuade him even if he wasnt that keen .
Whoever it was that said hes a gym fighter , i see your point but he really is a better boxer than your giving him credit for , hes possibly as good as tony bellew imo or not too far off , but due to his age he wont get any better now, if hes going pro he needs to do it fast , before his time has passed

Gary spars with Carl, he was part of the Dirrell prep.
Here's a pic, although not got one of his face. Him and Ronson Frank helped Carl out with southpaw work.
Gary is a youth worker i believe at the moment. He had a lot of talent as a youngster and still has enough left to be something in the pro game.

He said 'Tony Collins'! Definitely one of my all time favourite British fighters. Just thought I'd say that, jog on chaps ...

Pure bullshit ! What counts is fight night, sugar ray Leonard had terrible spars before Hagler and then put on a masterclass, every fighter has bad days in sparring,if that's what happened , but I douby it, don't mean nothing, Froch had real trouble with Louis Garcia in Sparring before he won his 1st world title. Ovil will be ready for his fight so will Bellew, could turn out to be a great fight. If this Gary Mayor guy who does not appear to be a boxer at present was to fight Ovil what do you think would happen ? Ko inside 3 rounds to Ovil, I am suprised you listened to someone like that, people always think they won in sparring, Ovil sparred Cleverley did well there, maybe Mayor is better then a world champion ? You must be a family member, close friend or easily fooled mate?

No. Apparently means it
is true but you don't want to be thought of as the first person to write it — even if you might be. It's a bit like 'a source' — very often there is no effing source, you're just covering your arse.

no mate , people on here , know my connection to boxing , and ive alreadygot a "fact" on the guy wrong on this very thread , so that shows how close i must be , not a case of easily fooled either just that ive seen the guy sparring and know he looks good , hes an ex amateur star and if it wasnt for his time he did in jail im pretty confident everyone else on here would know who he is .
I understand the points that sparring means nothing , although if thats really the case then why bother sparring ,???? no need to do something thats meaningless , ;;-) either way he could have merely been exagerating for all i know but i suspect he would at very least be a good match for Ovil , theres a reason he gets work as a sparring partner for froch .

Ovill was sparring on the week of the fight? I doubt that.
Most trainers taper off the sparring the week before the fight and the final week is fine tuning, weight management etc.
Is this guy boxing on one of your unlicensed shows and you are just trying to hype him up by any chance?
