Can anybody throw any light on the bill?
Obviously the main event speaks for itself, but all the other fights 3x2?
Is this some sort of Heavyweight prizefighter?

Hi Guys, Hey, I can tell you the concept is a last man standing style event, with the one winner being decided on the night. Brian gave me the details and I put the show into the Boxrec Schedule yesterday.
I beleive it's a terrific idea, just something a little different from the normal everyday domestic fight, I beleive it will be all crash and bang, as they will only have 3x2 min to get their work done, and the fitter guys will be able to shoot from the get-go without fear of gassing out.
Also, there are two other fighters yet to be included in this show, plus you may have noted two guys from the US are competing, so it's not set-up or designed to be for an Aussie winner, although i must say there are some pretty tough and rugged fighter's in there to get through.
Another terrific idea is: All the prize fighters will be presented in the ring gloved up and ready to go, No-one will know who theyre fighting until the draw inside the ring, that's where the draw will be done,
inside the ring live, with the last draw still in the ring, and then they fight, so everyone will know (The Draw) is not rigged
Also, Im told they have changed their production ideas, they are planning to bring a new standard in Aussie boxing, I'm told its a bit like Vegas, what is about to happen.
I beleive August 5th, will be their launch with a brand new concept of only 50/50% fights being on their shows, if fighters don't want to be a part of the 50/50 program, they simply won’t be fighting on their shows, every fight is a 50/50 fight or it won't happen.
Great if it comes off, good on them for trying to change the face of matchmaking as it is, in it's present form.
I might add that everyone comments on the match-ups they only see on a few televised shows, but there are many more non televised shows, where the match-ups are equally as good, if not better, than the few you get to see on Foxsports.
I only get to see them, because i attend more shows than the everyday fight fan, who would only go to one show here and there, and they see a small amount of fights which to comment on.
Cheers,
Brad Vocale

Why 3x2 though? I mean will they count as professional fights and go on the boxers records?

i suppose you are too young to remember the old TV boxing in the 1960s and 1970s? Most of the fights were 2 minute rounds and a lot were 3 rounders. It got more fights on the programs and the shorter rounds meant the fighting was faster.

But is it still legally a pro fight, 6 minutes? It's less than amateur boxing.

So what? In the time I am talking about only title fights were over three minute rounds. There were a lot of knockouts as well.
It was fast and entertaining.

Well I just want to know if it's pro boxing or some sort fairground show.

It is professional boxing. Under Australian boxing rules if a champion is knocked out in a fight with three minute rounds, regardless of the length and both fighters make the weigh limit for that division the champion loses his title. Heavyweight champions were an endangered species.
This made 2 minute rounds so popular.

It certainly is Professional boxing, while I am also not a fan of 2 min rounds, I don't beleive Professionals should fight in 2 min rounds, but in the heavyweight series, i think it's a good thing because the heavies traditionally gas out after a round or two, then they just lay all over each other. and end up with an ugly nothing fight.
What theyre trying to achieve here, is a full 2 min of explosive boxing, both boxer's just going for it, because there is just two min in which to win the round, It will be full of action for the whole fight, if all goes to plan, also I beleive there will be many more Knock-downs and eventually TKO's or Knock-outs, because each of the fighter's will be going hard from the bell.
**** Once your registered as a Professional boxer, every fight you enter into, is as a professional, the show is usually sanctioned just as a professional show, but of late, there has been Pro-Ams, where Amateurs fight first, then the Professionals take over later in the evening.
Traditionally, everyone likes to watch the heavyweights, why? cos their so unpredictable, one punch may, and often does change the direction of a fight, a good heavyweight fight is great to watch, especially with someone who has a bit of ticker and is relatively match fit.
That's why Bangin Ben Edwards is so popular, he never quits, he fights anyone, and will fight you till the very end to get the desired result.
Ive seen Ben in Muay Thai fights where he sometimes gasses out earlier than he should, and the reasons are not quite public, whether he had a good preparation and/or trained for the said fight, or whether he took the fight at late notice etc etc, but are all valid reasons why a fighter will gas out early
I was present at the Kirby v Edwards fight, and while i thought Kirby just won the fight, Ben showed tremendous heart to fight on, and go the distance after he gassed in about the 5th round from memory, his never say die attitude is why he is sooo popular amongst fans, plus he can bang and the end can come anytime and more times than not, against the run of play.
So yes, they heavyweight series, in my view and i am just hoping, will be a huge success and we should, Note i said should see some explosive fights and great boxing viewing compared to the normal domestic night at the fights.
Just my humble opinion guys.
Cheers, Brad

Notice that big Bob Mirovic is headlining in a ten rounder against the Rhino. This will become a clinch fest by Bob and will be a certain cure for insomniacs!

kylamy,
problem with edwards was that from half way onwards, bens punches had little impact cause he was so buggered. yes it was his first fight past a couple of rounds, but he is just not suited to more than 6 rounds of boxing imo.
we all like watching him fight, but if he's gunna fight the kirby's or better, he's gunna have to become a little fitter i believe.
i'll cheer for him whoever he fights anyway.

Buster your 100% right, he does gas early and then his power wanes, but he is a warrior and keeps going whether he's effective or not. Now against some of the better heavies, he will be found out quickly, but at local standard and this is no disrespect to the Iron Rhino, Ben just hung in there and was waiting for the Rhino to gas out and maybe fall over, but it didn't happen and would not happen, because Michael has experience over the longer journey, what about his wars with Nathan Briggs, or the absolute war with Solo, Yes, he can go better over the longer distances than Ben at this stage of their careers.
Note: I chatted to Ben at weigh-in, he was seriously concerned about his fitness, because he took the fight at very late notice after the sudden retirement of Justin Whitehead ,so with just three weeks notice, he was not prepared 100%, you also must remember that in Muay Thai, they fight for just 5x3 rounds. So they go hard for just 5x3 rounds with 2 min rest break.
Then he has ample time to recover, even tho, I have still seen Ben gas in 5 round fights, albiet with undue pressure and getting punched by some of the world's toughest, biggest and most dangerous monsters, so i can understand that, but to compete in boxing and at this level, over 10x3 or at regional level 12 x3, then he really needs to do some serious conditioning work. As you know, you gauge a fighter's fitness, not by what he can do, or for how long he can do it, but by how long it takes him to recover after he did it.
Like you, I think Ben is an exciting fighter, with power, and is a breath of fresh air to the heavyweight scene, lets hope for his sake that he can imporve his over-all fitness to go with the better heavyweights.
Another side note, the Mirovic v Kirby fight may be for the vacant Aussie title, the deal is not done between them yet, but they have the right man onto it, if Amatruda can't get it done, no-one can.
Cheers, Brad

i was completely stunned to see ben go the distance vs kirby.
knowing his size, lack of time to get fit properly and that he had not fought past a few rounds before and was gassed in those a fair bit, i'm sure he surprised himself he could still stand up at the end of the fight.
one of the more impressive sights i've seen in boxing for some time.

Buster, Yes I agree with you again, cos when you consider Michael's bulk, size and experience over the longer distance, also Mick is very very strong in close, I thought he would just get inside, stay in close and lay all over Ben, simply wearing him down that way, which is what he did in effect.
But this is where i give Ben great raps, cos he didn't have a long preparation and was pretty well stuffed by the 5th round, and it looked like his lack of fitness, would cost him the fight. But to his credit, he dug deep, hung in there and "to use a tennis phrase", just kept the ball in play, hoping for Michael to either gas out as well, or make a mistake.
Now as i said, i like Ben and also Mick, but i truly thought Michael won the fight, his effective aggression and overall punch ethic was superior to Ben's, simply because of his superior fitness and experience over the longer distance. While Ben's punches were fewer, they were heavier, and while Michael's punches were not as heavy, there were more punches.
But as i said, Bennie just hung in there waiting for Michael to make a mistake, plus as i said, with his very limited experience over this distance, and lack of fitness, he did a remarkable job going the 10 rounds against one of the hardest and biggest heavyweights in our country.
All in all, it was a remarkable performance, and both guys should be congratulated on a terrific Heavyweight title fight, I am really keen to see Edwards have another crack, and further establish himself in this division here in Australia.
I beleive he has the right credentials, it is just a matter of preparation, and his ability to improve his over-all fitness.
regards
Brad

Re Kylamy's post about the 50/50 proposal at the Pavilion.
I was at the May show when Brian made that announcement.
He said that any fighter that didn't want the risk, won't be on his shows.
In the Ben V Mick fight, that was micks strategy all along. Make Benny spend his energy trying to get off the ropes & it worked.
However, a fit Benny, I think would spin Mick around & give him serious grief.
On the 2 min. rounds. & One night stands.
Boxing has to move forward if they want to remain competitive.
New formats are fine but with the speed of information these days, it goes that entertainment has to adapt.
World titles & Pot of Gold pursuits are for the extremely gifted, sponsored & connected.
All others have to adapt to entertainment formula's if they want to stay competitive & that means coping with the short attention span that technology has introduced.
I'm as passionate a puritan as the next, but I'm also a realist, so if we have to turn up the wick, we have to expect it to burn quicker. That's what we have to do to keep the game alive.

Does that mean there are two open spots? Jae-chan Kim, who we were discussing in the other thread, could bring a little more international flavor to the event.
