TYSON PUNCHES OUT HEAVY DUTY RATINGS

TYSON Fury proved on Saturday night that he's not only the new star of World boxing after winning the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles but also a major ratings puller for Channel 5.
Channel 5 executives were left thrilled by 6ft 9' Fury's sensational performance in the victory over Dereck Chisora at Wembley Arena which attracted a peak audience figure of 3m viewers - demonstrating once again the appeal of boxing to the public.
British and Commonwealth champion Fury is now ready to become a global star with not only Channel 5 but American broadcasters eager to screen his future fights.
Fury's promoter Mick Hennessy believes the victory over Chisora is just the start of a great journey for the 22-year-old right to the top of world boxing.
Hennessy said: "The figures for Channel 5 were fantastic and I have to give great credit to Channel 5 because they listened to me and they believed in me when I told them about Tyson, unlike other broadcasters.
"When I promoted the World title fight between Carl Froch and Jean Pascal the figures were roughly 2.9m and that was a World title on ITV with a big build-up.
This is just the start for Tyson, he's a winner in the ring and he's a winner with the public sitting at home wanting to see a proper fighter and a guy who has the charisma to entertain them.
"The future is looking very bright for Tyson, we want him to win the Irish title next and then the European title and Channel 5 now have the opportunity to bring those fights to an even bigger audience. Nobody in British boxing is getting this amount of people watching their fights. Towards the end of the fight it recorded the highest viewing figures and was the most watched program on British television."

Congratulations to all at Hennessy Sports on a job well done.
There are people at work today talking to me abbout the fight who don't normally watch boxing.

Great news for boxing and really pleased for Mick Hennessy - he's a fighter!
Slighty off topic but imagine if a fighter failed to turn up to press conferences and help promote a FW show - Mr W would absolutely slate them. He did when Haye turned up late to a press conference when he was fighting Maccarinelli and Warren said it was a complete disgrace.

If they can do those figures in there first show without the momentum of previous shows and for a British and Commonwealth title !!!!!!
Imagine what can be done in future ???
Does anyone know if the undercard is being shown - heard so much about it.

Lets not get to carried away the winner of David Price and John McDermott is waiting for him and untill that fight he how cant they make these out rages claims after beating an over weight guy on Saturday. But the one good thing is has put life back into the british Heavyweight Divs.

It just goes to show that there is an audience for boxing on terrestrial TV in the UK.
Fury is also the right kind of guy to get behind, because he has balls & heart & he's willing to take on all-comers.
Thankfully we're not going to see another Audley Harrison type farce with Fury & thank goodness for that.

I wonder if Amir Khan's people might realise that it would be better for Khan to be on Channel 5 rather than Primetime?
They're both owned by the same company, so making the switch would not be a problem.

A big plus for boxing that Hennessy has returned boxing to terrestrial tv, lets hope it continues, the ratings look like it has made it a real success.
Saying that Hennessy needs to keep Fury winning and should keep him well away from Price, he can't bank on other title contenders turning up in such woeful shape.
A big well done to Tyson though he clearly had trained hard and was motivated, I didn't think he would win a domestic title after the McDermott fights

A Khan - Prescott rematch on Channel 5 would be a HUGE draw. I think that if the average sports (not boxing) fan had a choice between some bloke they don't know (Tim Bradley) or the bloke that took Khan out in the first round, I'd bet my life that a Prescott rematch would get a higher rating.

The big issue is that can terrestrial tv,esp oneof the lesser channels generate enough money for a big world title fight.
Domestic titles are one thing but they are cheap in comparison

Great news I hope they take a chance and get some of the big domestic clashes that can be made boxing can pull big ratings if it is done right it needs the exposure Groves Degale should have been on terrestrial rather than on PPV. Probably 10x more people saw Tyson on Saturday.

Better how? They are making a mint from PPV. They aren't going to go back to terrestrial, at least not until Channel 5 is offering serious wonga for advertising revenue.

Have you watched Price lately? He's far from stiff, his punching is very fluid, and he has an excellent defence. Of course he's bloody upright, you aren't going to fight out of a crouch at 6'8 and negate your advantages in height and reach....what a silly statement.
Watch Prices fight with Dallas, there's nothing stiff about him when he lets his hands go.
For me, Price is the man most likely to go places. He will smash McDermott to bits.
