Calzaghe turned down the Beyer fight!

I'm hearing reports that Joe Calzaghe was offered the chance to step in for the injured Danny Green and challenge Markus Beyer for the WBC super-middleweight title on February 28 in Germany.
Looks like he - or should I say his camp - turned it down.

Mind you, after watching the Reid fight, would YOU venture to Germany to fight a Sauerland fighter. Unless Calzaghe knocked him out, which there's always the possibility he might not, he would never get the decision. In fact, they would probably DQ calzaghe for hitting with the inside of the glove.

he knocked back a proper world title fight?! Guess who he'd have to fight if he won though.........yep Danny Green so there is your answer

I'm not surprised Calzaghe turned it down.
People slag off the Germans for not fighting on away turf, but Calzaghe is as bad.
How can he call himself World Champion when he has only fought abroad once and then in Denmark.
Come on, Joe, who are you trying to kid. Youve held this title for seven years and have not once beaten an American in America.
Go and fight Echols or Green in Las Vegas.
Every year you spout nonsense about beating the best.
Dont say it.
DO IT, or at least try.

they'll come out with tickets have already been sold for the Mger fight but bring Beyer over there and offer him big bucks!!!

My initial reaction is one of extreme disappointment. I have to accept it's another one of those cases where we don't know what goes on behind the scenes, the full facts etc, but even so we all know he's not going to get many opportunities like this. Suspect it has more to do with Warren's relationship re. the WBO and the WBC. What do you think?

If and I mean if a WBO champion is prevented from negotiating terms to fight a WBC champion because his promoter does not get on with the WBC, then the WBO champion should have some kind of leagl recourse to remove his promoter from the equation.
Preventing a client (a fighter is a client of a promoter) from negotiating with another individual or organization is a restraint of trade.
THERE IS NO EXCUSE WHY THESE FIGHTS CANT BE MADE.
IF THE FIGHTERS WANT THE FIGHTS, THEY WOULD FIGHT.

However, this would mean pissing off their promoter, which in turn could lead to a split, which could be career suicide for the boxer. Most fighters cannot cope with being promotional free agents.

True, but you cant let them hold you to ransom.
If I were Calzaghe I would sign with Audley as I reckon he will end up being the only promoter on the BBC.

Don't SEM-Lion have a deal with the BBC too, and Hennessey?

if this is true and was before he decided to go up to Light Heavy then IMO that is a piss poor decision. He is moaning about his inactivity and how he deserves the big fights, but seems unwilling to risk anything even for a credible world title

I can't believe Calzaghe would've turned down a chance like that - he'd pulverize Beyer and I'm sure he knows that.
If it's true I can only imagine the Germans made unreasonable demands in having options on his future fights.

Good point. The more I think about it, the more unlikely it seems that Beyer's camp would even want to dream of taking on Calzaghe, a fight they must surely know he wouldn't come close to winning.
My suspicision is that it's just a PR stunt by Beyer's camp, safe in the knowledge that the deal they've put on the table for Calzaghe is one he could and would never accept.

MightyW - I'm with you on that one. I am loathe to support Calzaghe but the contract must have been dodgy. Spunds like Sauerland have made an offer that they know Joe can't accept - probsbly has a nice "headline number" attached to it re: purse, so they can bleat he has turned the fight down.
Calzaghe would surely fight any of the Germans super-m's if the purse was decent and there were no options.

I think Shakermaker hit the nail, if as expected Calzaghe won the fight then he would have to fight Danny Green and you think he wants to do that? Nope. I am sick and tired of politics to be honest, the WBC will not do this or the WBO won't let that happen etc etc what a loads of bollocks, can't guys just fight?!
Calzaghe is running to Light Heavy to avoid any meaningful matchups i think, i gave him the benefit of the doubt at first but he and Ottke are as bad as one another. We will never know how good Calzaghe is because he will only decline from now on and that defining fight will NEVER happen.

Yes, the dreaded option may have reared it's ugly head again. I cannot see allegedly even countenancing the idea of them having options on Calzaghe, and rightly so?
Has anyone seen anything on any german websites about this story?

I really doubt Calzaghe is running scared Steve, listening to him talk I think he genuinely believes he'd beat anyone out there, outside of Jones Jr. The near novice Green included.
I've heard he struggles to make 168 for awhile now, so seeing as he's getting older it's no real suprise to see him move up. Most fighters do that in the end after all.
It's just, as usual, Joe's timing is terrible.

Fair enough MW perhaps he isn't scared but there has to something going on with Calzaghe, pulling out of the Mger MK fight over christmas with a virus and then going out to Cardiff clubbing a few nights later. He will move up to LH i think without bothering anymore with SM, he's made enough cash and he is just searching for a payday, Tarver V Calzaghe would be interesting and of course when at LH he will be in the territory of my man....Paul Briggs!! Watch out Joe, The Hurricane will fight ANYBODY. Wouldn't be surprised if Briggs called Joe out shortly after his move up.

yep and i bet that joe would then say he wont fight briggs coz he has funny teeth orsome pathetic excuse. calzaghe vs briggs would be a great fight because briggs is a mean mother BUT his chin, while not soft,is not the greatest in boxing.
how come green is prepared to go to germany but others (eg joe)are not.
surely contracts from those germans would be very similar .i would not think fenech is more influential than warren but perhaps so!!!mundine also seems to be more than prepared to go to germany. so why are the auusies prepared to go but calzaghe isnt?does seem odd to me.

I think its because Green had nothing to lose in going to Germany. As for being scared of Green...Joe would stop Green in 10.

by Sweet P
Green had nothing to lose going there as he would get a raw deal in either England or Germany.
I don't think that Fenech wanted Green to fight Ottke or Calzaghe that early but Beyer would have been the easiest opponent of the 3 champs.
I know there was a few deals that had to be made to fight Beyer and Green had to let Suaerland promote a few fights after if he won. Now when Green gets a rematch there is no deal as the WBC forced the rematch.

wow.i am really suprised fenech would of let anyone take the reins of one of his fighters.suppose good in a way that it do not eventuate that way but really glad to hear when the rematch happens danny will not be bound to the german promoter.
with the talk of danny now fighting in march does anyone know who his potential opponents may be?

i've seen danny green in the beyer fight and i wasn't that impressed

he looks ok quite tough and strong but limited, and beyer was having his moments before green commited suicide by blatantly and deservedly being disqualified after planting a glaswegian kiss on beyer :x
calzaghe's career is just going nowhere he needs to do something about it cos its now or never

he really does need to seriously consider his options cos things r just not working out at the moment.
