Masters titles

I'm always seeing that the International and British Masters titles are up for grabs domestically. I think they are great for small hall fighters to get their chance at a title but who sanctions them? I don't think its the BBofC and cant find any info about the titles online. Any info?

Wasn't they the ones that the PBA started. I seem to remember Barry McGuigan on about them but could be wrong.

I am in total agreement with you. When you get 2 boxers that are never going to reach the top are even matched fighting for probably the only title they will ever win. They I think they serve a purpose.

Thanks, that was insightful. I knew nothing what so ever about these titles but you have educated me.

Exactly my point. People lament the intercontinentals, but I don't see how the masters are any different or better. In fact, seeing some of the guys who fight for them, they are worse. And pointing out that these guys won't win any other titles hardly justifies it as "championship boxing" for the punter. It's like sports days giving out ribbons to kids who finished 7th in 8-person races.

I like the Area titles - not so much a fan of the Masters, especially the "International" Masters

I think the masters are good belts if u wanting a steping stone but standard is not always their and most fights are even between fighters in same stable or 1 prospect and another with something to prove after a couple of losses .

i think the masters titles have taken away the value of the area title i remember when if you won the s/area you'd be in line for the british title but not no more

Yes, but they may also at some point be good for TV who demand a title fight on a card. Sometimes one is hard to deliver. I think many good fighters would have been really pleased to have an extra title sitting on their mantle piece even if its a masters. Is there a chance of Shane going for a masters clinton?

Of course, any fighter likes any belt, trophy, medal, whatever. I still have my old silver plates from club amateur shows. But I wouldn't claim they made me a "champion" of anything. They're just souvenirs or keepsakes. Same with the Masters titles. A physical prize for the lads to fight over and take home. But to the punter, they mean nothing. And as for TV - when was the last time there was a Masters title fight on TV?

Titles dont mean you get on tv now adays it a sad fact that some british title fights dont even get on tv. It all depends on who your master is and how much control they have in boxing.

it will be nice in a few years for boxers who are retired to just look over at the title just for the memories of their fighting days we all know its not the biggest title to own but there still 10 round fights so its not just about winning the fight and title its about the preperations in the gym to get in shape for these fights the sparring you do and that so it would be nice to win one of these titles to remind you of your boxing years....

In all honesty i don't quite know what they are a champion of either. I'd say it means your a champion of second domestic batch. So the Lonsdale belt is the premier league of domestic scene whilst masters is the championship

Nobody would turn down the chance to fight for a belt what every it is. It's not that bad when u think the wbc av 27 different belt .

i think that is the problem people are using the titles if i were a manager i'd steer my boxers towards the area title then onto british ect ect i'd rather watch a good 10 round fight with a international fighter like in the old day's than a crapy ibo wbu wbf so called world title

But as a fighter would you prefer a 10 round fight with an international fighter for a higher ranking, or a Title fight with a domestic fighter with something to show for it afterwards?

all fighters are different my 2 brothers boxed soley for the £££ thats why they wanted the big fights and took on who ever was infront of them, they didn't win all the time but they give it there best and we are proud of what they achived, also they are in the record books for ever anyway.
i can see that some fighters want a belt but they could go for a area/english/celtic title there is plenty to go around the thing is they are championship titles and should be hard to win and not everyone can do that but thats boxing :TU:

Agreed.

In this day and age, you'd have hoped that the 8(?) Area titles would be getting more usage, leading to English or Celtic title shots (although personally I'd do away with the Celtic title), thus leading to British title shots.

Master and International Masters titrles may be useful because a Southern-Area champ cannot defend against someone not from the Southern area while they CAN fight for a masters title, but surely this should be the push to move-up to English level?

im a proud owner of the international masters title its a bloody ugly looking thing and it doesnt mean much to most people but it means alot to me i worked hard for it,not everybody can win british or world titles so when a fighter hangs up his gloves its nice to have something to show for it,its nice to get called a champion whatever level its at :TU:
