Pavlik pulls out of fight: Top Rank forced to cancel event in Youngstown

Former middleweight champion and current WBC#1-rated super middleweight contender Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik’s professional boxing comeback took a wrong turn inasmuch as Pavlik withdrew from his upcoming 10-round bout against Darryl Cunningham today. The Pavlik-Cunningham bout was scheduled to take place on Saturday at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, OH, and was to be televised live on SHOWTIME® as the main event of a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation. Both the broadcast and the live event have been canceled. Ticketholders can get a refund by returning their tickets to the place of purchase.

“Top Rank is very disappointed at Kelly’s sudden decision to discontinue the rebuilding of his boxing career,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank, Pavlik’s promoter. “Kelly’s team specifically outlined a strategy for Kelly to return to the ring in an effective fashion. Kelly’s team gave us their objectives and we set them on a course, which began last May with Kelly’s fight against Alfonso Lopez and was to continue on Saturday against Darryl Cunningham. It seems Kelly has derailed this plan.”

Pavlik's name didn't get mentioned, surprisingly. You're right though, they're awful. Nearly as bad as George Groves'.

Sorry LC, but Pavlik's tatt's are amongst some of the worst i've ever seen! They look like tranfers that have been smudged.

I forecast his drinking/ abusive temper will lead him to a very serious situation soon indeed - even beyond bad tattoos.

Punching his parent's window in and dragging his own brother through aint a sane thing to do.

Spent a long while there... he reckoned he didn't have a drink problem, just couldn't refuse a chance to "party" ?

Was he not in bother with the cops a few weeks back for giving his brother a kickin? Looks like he might be done.

For the best, the possibilty of him fighting Bute was a horrible prospect.

This is dissapointing news but had been predicted earlier on a eastside boxing forum that he was having some kind of contractual dispute with Toprank and was going to pullout so i'm not totally surprised by this.

Kelly Pavlik has threatened to pull out of Saturday's fight against Darryl Cunningham over the offer he received to face IBF super middleweight titleholder Lucian Bute in his next fight, RingTV.com has learned.

A source familiar with the negotiations said Pavlik (36-2, 32 knockouts) is upset because he has been offered far less by his promotional firm, Top Rank, than Mikkel Kessler was offered to face Bute. Kessler turned down the offer.

The Cunningham bout is part of a package deal that is to lead to a fall match up against Bute.

"Kelly had heard that Kessler was being offered something like $3.5 million, and that he turned that down. So Kelly wasn't really happy with the $1.1 million that Top Rank was offering him," the source said on Tuesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

"So I would say that right now, I don't think that (Saturday's) fight's going to happen. Unless, of course, Top Rank comes back with something (better)."

Pavlik, the former middleweight champion, pulled out of a fight with Paul Williams last year because of a staph infection in his hand.

"This had nothing to do with an injury," the source said.

Showtime is scheduled to televise the Pavlik-Cunningham fight.

He could still be the 2nd best Middleweight at 160lbs and pick up one of the world title belts but it seems he can no longer make that weight, unfortunately he seems to turn into an average fighter the moment he ventures past 160lbs as his 3 fights above that weight have shown against Taylor 2, Hopkins and Lopez.

I do think his career was poorly handled post Taylor first fight, putting him in against Bernard Hopkins at 170lbs was a meaningless fight and he had everything to lose and nothing to gain by the fight and probably was still too raw to handle a fighter like Bhops, you would have thought Toprank would have learned from this fight but again they put him in against another slick crafty fighter in Martinez when they didn't have to and again he loses.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but he would of been better off had he faced Arthur Abraham and Paul Williams back when those fights were discussed and the public wanted to see them plus he would have made more money from them too.

Talk of him facing Bute in October was simply crazy, there was no way he would have stood a chance till he had at least 3 or 4 more confidence building fights at super middle, it just seemed like Toprank wanted to throw him against Bute to get one more big payday out of him without really thinking about the longterm best interests of Pavlik.

Pavlik is heading toward becoming the next Scott Harrison...another wasted boxing world champ talent lost to the bottle .

I think the Hopkins fight was the only one they could get without Pavlik taking a cut in pay - I'm sure a BM issue prior to the fight alluded to this.

There's certain types of fighter that Pavlik struggles with - Taylor's movement and jab had him pinned down until Jermain gassed, then Hopkins dominated him with movement and his short punching, likewise Martinez with movement and solid shots.

Bute isn't all that IMO but he'd demolish Pavlik on current form.

It seems KP has his demons and it's best he overcomes them first before boxing again. If that means it's the end for him then so be it. Better that than be come in half prepared and smacked around the ring for 12 rounds.

He looked unmotivated last time out. Not really a big surprise but still a shame for the SMW division

Pavlik says the withdrawal was a two-fight deal and that he wasn't "fighting a southpaw for peanuts"

$1.5m is a lot of peanuts for such a shot fighter.

Dan humor aside I bet right now he would struggle as the Ingle style (when it works) takes tradiional boxers confidence away and you could say that Martinez is the best Ingle style in history!! D
