Khans Youthful Exuberance and Inability to fight a 2nd way

Amir Khan is a terrific athlete at this young age.....he really has turned it on tremendously under Freddie Roach.....and of course praise the lord he is still 24......

My point is this. I sense that Khan is a much bigger banger than we have seen so far........his early pro career he still had that amateur style of fighting rushed......even against maidana and malignaggi he seemed to waste too much of his abundant energy dancing or rushing....I realise these days every one of his fights is a big fight.....but id love to see Khan develop a more considered counterpunching economical style as his career progresses......in the mould of a marlon starling or a adrian broner......i mean khan has the reflexes, the speed and i beleive natural power........i really regret Khan with his phenemenal natural talent is moving more and more away from being the puncher i thought he would turn out......mcguigan compared him to hearns early on.....I know khan has scored one punch knockdowns of judah and maidana which are good achievements but I do think Khan needs to sit more on his shots.......and pick them a bit more.......his youthful exuberance will leave him by the time he is 29.....than again Khan will probably be out of the game by than......Im finding it difficult to quantify exactly what i mean.....but i just feel Khan should have , for all his success.....turned out to be a classier boxer........hell i know it was aiming high to expect him to be a new don curry or wilfred benitiz......but i just wish hed think more.....and sit more on his shots....

I was sitting on the bogs at work today, and had a queery i was wondering people could enlighten me on....

How would Ramadam affect an athlete, it doesnt seem naturally healthy to deprive yourself of food and fluids for upto 17 hours a day, is it harmful?

i lived with a guy whilst he was fasting when i was at uni, and it didnt bother him much. He ate a certain diet in the morning before his fasting began and ate lots after it finished each day. In reality its only reversing what people do normally, we normally dont eat at night and eat during the day. It aint 17 hours most either, and Khan doenst fully train during that time either apparently.

It depends what time of year the fasting is. Unfortunately, now and for the next 10-15 years, ramadhan will occur during the summer where the days are at their longest. This, coupled with the intense heat, makes it almost impossible to train effectively. So no, unless you have expert nutritionists guiding you on what to consume and how to rest your body, I don’t think it’s that safe or productive to train during ramadhan. I, and many others, take a month out.

Back to the thread, I understand exactly where you’re coming from. It’s such a shame that an athletic talent like Khan had much of his early career wasted by not learning to box effectively and work towards his strengths. He continued with his amateur style and got by over-matched opponents on athleticism alone. And it baffles me how, at the time, they remained so ignorant about his weak punch-resistance, and doing nothing to work on his defence to protect such a liability.

But, despite it being later than one would have hoped, he does now seem to be developing into the fighter he was intended to be. He’s not as amateurish as before, he’s more patient, and he’s more aware of his strengths, as well as his weaknesses. This brings me on to the next point about him sitting down on punches. The reason you don’t see him doing so, is because you become more of a stationary target when you decide to plant your feet to throw. Considering his weak chin and leaky defence, that’s kinda’ the last thing Khan wants to do. Boxing and continuously moving allows him to escape easier from punches, and remain in a safe position, out of the opponents range.

However, he can’t be relying on this forever. There will come a time when he can no longer move around as well as he used to, and he’ll need to rely on core, boxing fundamentals - head movement, rolling with punches, anticipating shots better, etc. It’s these which will allow him to cope with pressure and eliminate the need for him to waste lots of energy hopping around the ring. He needs to observe the likes of Hopkins and Mayweather, who have become masters at prolonging their careers by adopting a more energy-conserving approach to their game. Rarely do they waste punches, and rarely do they panic and fold when attacks come their way. If Khan hasn’t got the capacity to do this, I fear he may become another Roy Jones.

I never rated Khan up until recently. Saw him Spar when he first turned Pro and wached all his fights and it was obvious there was a lot missing.

Now he is maturing as a fighter and becoming more rounded under Roach I am really enjoying watching his career develop.

The face that he has had the guts to face who he has at 24 is brilliant and I hope we have a World Champion, who keeps improving, for many years to come.

khan as the ability to not be affected by his mistakes & has the mental courage to do his best to change & adapt. i agree khan is an awesome athlete who has a great engine & probably the fastest fighter in todays game no doubt. you've mentioned benetez & starlon who are timing perfectionist's & savvy.with more expieriance khan will get more savy but not that level :!: mayweather has both which is rare & that is why he is considerd possibly the greatest.

good posts uncle rio and hurlock.

Hurlock i agree i cant see khan developing a boxing counterpunching brain on the level of a starling or mayweather.......but still there lurks a very slight sense of disapointment at how Khan doesnt seem to be developing his tactical nous or fighting brain whatever u want to call it.....it must be remembered that Khan as a brilliant 17 year old amateur with hardly a senior amateur bout behind him, showed a remarkable boxing brain as well as physical talent, and his rematch win over kindelan also showed the kid learned tactically......but since than i just dont see it......anyway if he does leave the game around 28/29 which he seems to want to do, it may not matter

i thought khan was phenominal in sydney, plus he was the only boxer on the team which made me warm to him even more. i thought he scored alot v kindelan & they never scored them. kindelan never put a sweat on until he met khan, i thought it was alot closer :!: ( i will get shot down for this no doubt :!: )

khans speed is blurring & he fires out shots like a machine knowing one will land :DDD he doesnt really place them & possibly cant?? i think in the ams his attributes made him near on impossible to beat whilst maturing his weakness is his defence & i think his chin is suceptable due to his large output which takes alot of energy which in return weakens you if that makes sense.

i think turning proffesional khan fell victim of his own attributes, he went in for the kill after having easy sucess & fought like a killer. he learnt the hardest & most damaging way possible & like that little boy from sydney he's shown tremendous bravery & courage & his win v kotlenik showed he can box to a plan, steering away from his weaknesses & make victory incredibly hard for his opponent.

hail king khan :!:  :DDD

The thing that worries me is that he still flurries from the nipple area, if you see what I mean. I can just see someone patient who can punch waiting till he's in the middle of his fists-blurring shoeshine then sticking one straight back down the pipe. Easier said than done, mind...

Just put on his best performance and he still gets ragged, I guess Khan will never win some people over.

what an ignorant post by english wizard. why dont u actually do a search on the posts people like me have made about khan recently i was a critic of him just before and after the prescott fight but have defended him ever since. yet as soon as i make a valid point about him developing his tactical awareness and not relying on his youthful physical gifts exclusively.....you throw a hissy fit about nothing
