What do people think of Arturo Gatti?

After reading a previous thread, id thought id pick up on a topic which i think`s a good un, Although i know he aint from the UK, I thought i`d like to hear UK fightfans opinions on how good Arturo actually is.

For me, Gatti as a fighter is little more than average. He is a huge bowl of hype...The only truly great fighter he fought(DLH) done a number on him. He struggled like hell(twice) against a very shop-warn Mickey Ward, Ivan Robinson beat him up(twice)..Ok he`s won against good operator`s..Ruelas(he got lucky)...Terron Millet(shot)...but im unimpressed

I know i may get some stick for this post..but hey im a man, i can take it.

I`d like to make one thing clear..im not questioning the guys Heart or entertainment value...and i can see big improvments under Buddy McGirt, but that doesnt change my opinion.

No, Gatti is a warrior. Too much a warrior. He's basically elected to slug it out with opponents much of his career as a result, when, as he showed in the second fight with Ward, he can box like a dream.

I think he looks like Benicio Del Torro.

If we had any fighter in this country with the talent of Gatti we'd be going ballistic.

Gatti is unlucky that he's been in an era where there have been some quality opperators in his weight devision. He also a tad unfortunate that the ruling concerning him means he cannot make Lightweight, I'm sure he would have beaten Castillo.

I think this thread tells you what I think should Gatti vs Hatton ever happen soon.

Most people forget that he was a world champion before losing to DLH.

I think it will be hard to tell whether he is over or underrated until he steps in with someone better than Ward. It's easy to look like the second coming of SRL boxing Ward, who makes a lead statue look nimble.

Gatti isn't that talented. He is a well above average fighter though, no mistake about it, people who dismiss him as a journeyman who got lucky are talking shite, but I don't think he is any more talented than Hatton, if anything I think it may be the other way.

Think Gatti wouldn't have got drawn into a slugfest with Tackie, bet he would have.

He was a legit champ at lightwieght, beating Tracy H Patterson,Manfredy also. but those were a long time ago. I wouldnt dream of calling him a Journeyman..but i wouldnt call him a great either(although has been in great fights)...If Gatti fight`s anyone at lightwelter he will get beaten...Harris,Judah,Mitchell,Hatton,Tszyu,Corley,Mayweather...even Witter..would all beat him(IMO).
Im not sure that Gatti would beat Castillo either....at lightwelter perhaps..but at lightwieght gatti would be weak and the body shots would bust him up......of course this is all conjecture, and Hey i picked Bailey to knock out Ishe smith in 3 :)

I feel Gatti is a better boxer then largely seen. He was a good amateur and since teaming up with McGirt we have seen more of his old skills shine through.

Gatti mostly CHOOSES to have wars, rather then relie on skills to win fights and it is for this reason that he will go down as a great 'TV Fighter', as the Yanks call em.
A sure fire ratings winner as all his matches contain dangerous exchanges.

His fight with TH Patterson was at 130lb.

Great fight, Gatti at his best. Patterson was a good champion and very underrated. A very good puncher.

Whilst Gatti isnt a great fighter, he is a very good one and has competed and won at genuine world class.

To call him average is very unfair.

I think he may have been more sucessful had he boxed more, but who knows for sure.

Whatever, he has been great for boxing.

Ooop`s , guess i should check my fact`s

Maybe average is a little unfair...but i`ll reserve my judgement untill he fight`s someone other than Branco or Micky Ward.
