Richard Williams WILL be fighting for the vacant Commonwealth light-middleweight title on January 31 at York Hall. Salford's Jamie Moore has relinquished the title to concentrate on his forthcoming British title revenge match with Scott Dixon.
No opponent announced as yet for comebacking Williams, who last fought in June 2003 when he was outpointed by Spain's Sergio Martinez, in what seemed a shock at the time, but Martinez's subsequent outclassing of Adrian Stone puts the result into context.
Williams twice dropped Martinez.

He would have been well compensated for sure. His promoter Tommy Gilmour had a good earner at the St Andrews Sporting Club last night (the 250th boxing show at the club, so I'm sure even the Scots were dipping into their pockets). No doubt that's why Moore relinquished today.
On that note, William Abeylan, the American who challenges Scott Harrison for the WBO featherweight title in March, was sweetened with 100 grand for stepping aside and allowing Harrison an immediate rematch with Manuel Medina.

According to several newspaper accounts (one of them done by Buncey, admittedly), that's what Abelyan got for stepping aside as mandatory challenger to Medina and allowing Harrison the rematch.

Well, Harrison is a Sky-TV darling. I don't think anyone has had more title fights than him in such a short career, and we all know how much Sky love showing title fights, regardless of their nature.
The comebacks of Alex Arthur and Richard Williams are further evidence of that. Sky are insisting they come back in title fights! Williams' camp seem to be struggling to find a suitable opponent for "The Secret" for the vacant Commonwealth title next week. The latest man in the frame is some Ghanaian called Aiyteh Powers.
It could be Austin Powers for all I know.

I was very impressed with Martinez's (hes Argentinian by the way) boxing skills, he looked very fluent, rangy and quick in both fights, especially the Adrian Stone one. After he beat Williams we got the usual excuses from the commemtators, saying Williams was ill and he wasn't himself, but I think he just got beat by the better man on the night and I find it disrespectful to Martinez to have his achievement belittled by the commentators. Saying that I would love to see one of our Brits give him a good thrashing as I hate to see Argies win anything. Call me racist if you want, but I don't think the Argies actually class as a race
