Have any of you boxers or know of boxers who have had LASIK and boxed?

LASIK is the laser eye which the cut a flap in your eye and peel back.

I've just had it done and boxing is not recommended after it, but the odd forum post I can find say competing / sparing with no problems.

I've just had LASEK because it was reccomended for contact sports.

I think times have moved on and so has the quality of treatment. Probably not best to do it right after treatment, though!

I had LASEK too.

I never boxed but played lots of rugby and still play football.... was four years ago and I've had no problems.

Sometimes the condition of your eyes dictates the surgery that you have.

Apparently LASIK offers a quicker recovery but I was out and about the very next day, in the middle of December drinking in the pub with my sunglasses on, like a proper cool bastard

For people who do contact sports (boxing, mma, rugby), lasek is recommended over lasik.

Lasek is the older procedure which scrapes the cornea in order to achieve the improvements. Lasik by contrast involves an incision in the cornea in order to improve your sight. As a result, if you get hit or thumbed in the eye after lasik, there's a risk of the cornea tearing, unlike with lasek.

If having laser eye surgery best to mention you participate in contact sports and a good eye surgeon should recommend lasek (if he doesn't I'd be concerned about his credentials). The downside of lasek is it takes longer to heal (hence 90% or surgeries are now lasik).

I had it done 3 months ago and started sparring again after 6 weeks (although check with your surgeon about how long you should wait). I had a scratch on the cornea a few weeks after sparring (totally unrelated to the surgery) which could have been a hell of a lot worse if I'd had lasik) That healed up after a week and I was sparring again. The only other thing I've noticed now that I do have my eye stung/water/blur occasionally which never happened when I wore contact lenses.

i had lasek in 2008 had 17 since and many many rounds of sparring - and ive had no trouble except sum dryness in my eyes after fights/spars

I got injured last december and was out of they gym for 5 months, this was after training and fighting for the last 4 years.

While I was out I didn't miss the gym, gained weight ect. When I got back in the gym, had a bout lined up even though my hunger had not returned. I got injured again and couldn't fight.

I decided my fighting days were up, still went to the gym to keep fit and got a great deal for LASIK.

I was blind as a bar when I took my medical and am sure I could still get carded again. Amateur rules state no eye surgery.

Wanting to fight has still not returned but boxing is a never say never kinda sport.

Got LASEK in South Korea for 700 quid for both eyes - fantastic treatment and a lifetime guarantee. What the doctor told me was that LASIK was no good for any contact sport and if you get blunt force trauma then the stitches in the eye can come undone, however, recovery rate is far quicker than LASEK.

It is cheaper to fly to South Korea, stay a week or two, get LASEK done by ultimate professionals and go home than it would be to get it done in the UK. The whole cost of getting it done in Korea would probably cost you two grand. Good value for all you blind bats out there!

13 years ago lasik.sparred from 2002 to 2008 never had any issue.had two black eyes and a cut above two never any issues.am 5 years retired now

No, I have sparred a couple of times but nothing more than a move around.

The hunger never came back.

Work, family ect I can't imagine ever having enough time to train like I used to.

Maybe one day though. My eyes are still perfect :)

My brother got LASIK surgery on both eyes in 2007 & two weeks later, while he was at work, he glimpsed upwards as something caught his attention. It happened to be a paper airplane of all the Goddarn things. Well as luck would have it, the projectile hit him smack dab, square in the eyeball. He said it was like someone pulling a window shade on his eye. Blindness, immediately overtook his left eye. Although it was brighter with his eye open, he could see nothing but a glow. He had to have that eye re-operated on. This had such an emotional effect on him that he was terrified to resume his amateur boxing career. He expected to take 4-6 months off, but couldn't bring himself to step back in the ring for a full 18 months. His first fight back ended with both his eyes blackened & he went full on from there. He has even been thumbed in both eyes without repercussion; well, without permanent repercussion anyhow. So I can inform you that LASIK surgery should not prevent you from boxing for any longer than six months. The headgear does a good job of protecting your eyes if you are impatient, but a thumb in the eye will surely cause the same effect my brother experienced, should it occur before your eyes have completed their healing.
