Well the former BALCO bay area labs company creator is now worming his way into boxing and to be honest, I dont like that one bit.

The guy is tweeting away and alluding to Pacquiao AND Mayweather both being on steroids now, in an effort to garner some more headlines. He has just finished with Andre Berto, and is now part of Donaire's camp.

This guy has absolutely ruined a multitude of Olympic athletes with his "supplements" and now has a new clever range on the shelf.

Even the chief of the US anti-doping agency said "To sell a dirty supplement is easy -- convicted felons can do it -- so who knows what's in this stuff?" Tygart said. "I believe everyone deserves to be rehabilitated, but I question why any elite-level athlete would think anyone like this would have a secret recipe that can work so well. For the life of me, I can't imagine why anyone would associate with someone like this who's made so many mistakes in the past."

This guy is dodgy as hell. I know supliments play a big part of professonal sport and done right it can be very useful. I cannot believe people would want to risk their carears trusting a bloke like Conte.

You have companies like CNP (Kerry Kayes) who the british lads are using more and more and he is one of the most respected guys around for this sort of thing, so I cannot see Conte will ever make his way into the UK when Kerry is leading the way.

There is no objective scientific evidence that supplements make a jot of difference over and above a healthy balanced diet. Protein shakes for example are a nonsense. You'd be as well drinking powdered milk.

Conte has been with Donaire for awhile. You could look at the flipside of the coin and say a guy like Conte will not want to be caught doing something wrong. He's got a lot of eye's on him and can't afford to slip up twice.

My personal point of view is no athlete should go near him, but it's up to them to make that decision.

Yeah, no self respecting athlete ought to want anything to do with him.

The steroids issue is an awkward one - 99.9% of athletes in any sport will take something that they know to be legal in order to improve their performance or aid recovery etc, when I played rugby I regularly used anti-inflammatory tablets for example, and I suspect a significant minority would take something that is illegal if they felt they were going to get away with it.

Much like games console manufacturers and ''chippers'', the cheats are always one step ahead and can develop things that won't show up under the current drug testing regimes that are in place around the world.

I can see Saxon's point, in that you might as well just let people cheat.... well, actually they wouldn't be cheating - and to put whatever they want into their bodies and then you have a level playing field.

Of course we'd all rather everyone just be honest and live their lives as clean athletes, in particular cycling and athletics you have to have reservations over every single one of them, I can recall a cyclist not so long back anonymously claiming that you've no chance of getting to the top without cheating. Sad really.

The biggest deterent for me would be to retain blood samples for a set period after the competition, which can be tested under the probably advanced testing methods.... but then you run the risk of potentially having to DQ athletes years after a particular event.

If it reduces the number of cheats though I'm all for it.

Do you think he cares really ?

The guy ruined so many Olympians, famous baseball legends like Barry Bonds etc etc - would he really be arsed if some relatively unknown boxer like Donaire or whomever fell foul of his funky milkshakes ?

He did bird for money laundering and designing / selling steroids en masse to his region.

It isn't all about performance enhancement though. Governing bodies have to take into account health and well-being of an athlete.

If you simply say "take whatever you want and everyone is on a level playing field" then that means that athletes will almost be forced to take whatever gives them the biggest performance enhancement just so they can compete with others who are doing the same. That could lead to massive health complications.

For example, gene doping, is an issue that the world anti doping association are pretty worried about (and have added to their list of banned methods of performance enhancement) as it is very difficult to detect and potentially could lead to massive increases in performance. Trials on humans with severe life-limiting disorders and on non-human primates have suggested that some forms of gene-therapy could lead to cancer in some cases and heart attacks in others. It is the same for many other potential forms of performance enhancement.

A responsible governing body that cares about the well-being of athletes does not give them the right far less the encouragement to put themselves in potential risk of serious health consequences.

I would like to see open roid fights as it would be fun and full of anger.

I like seeing how someone on roids deals with getting beaten, where does all the anger go once they get KTFO?

I think Richard "The Alien" Grant's celebration answers that one.

I don't see the point in cheating though, because you're cheating yourself as much as anybody else.

Victor Conte does have a bad reputation but from what ive read he is using sport science in order to improve Berto's fitness. Using things such as Altitude chambers which will increase the red blood cell count and in turn increase his endurance. Ensuring there is rest. Conte is doing for his boxers what most elite boxer's should be utilising these days. It will bring about career longetivity. I bet he is also monitoring the heart, eating patterns, sleeping patterns and so on too. Although it wouldnt surprise me if he tried a bit of the hard to detect blood doping lol

Roids is a global word, but the particular drug in question may have little or no benefit to a boxer.

A bit more power and endurance through the easily detectable nandrolone is one thing, increasing the red blood cells by 25-50% by using a drug for people with chronic hepatitis is quite another (EPO)

Products that increase muscle mass are largley useless in a weight governed sport. Things like EPO, which will make you fight the last round as intensely as the first round are plain dangerous.

We've all been in the ring and after sparring a bunch of rounds, when the stamina runs out it can be the hardest place in the world. Even harder if your opponent has zero signs of fatigue. They can pick you off and punch your brains in.

Of course, the lure of the money has tempted people to cheat many times in sports, look at the young Pakistani bowler who basically gave away his career for a poxy few quid....

I agree with your suggestion about seeking legal assurances from your supplier, but if you were busted you'd then have to prove that it was their supplements that were illegal, which is of course a minefield.

The only other way is for the respective commissions, whether that be WADA or somebody else, to issue a list of approved supplements that people can take - though how would such a list be compiled? And also, who would maintain it?

It could get to the stage where you'd have an athlete approaching them saying ''I want to use X, will I be cheating?''
