Just saw Gatti-Ward 1

Post by DeuceOfSpades »

wow

Ward is one tough mofo, why in the hell did they ever have Gatti fight him? He's never been KOed (except on a cut) and he doesn't get hurt.

Anyway, My card read:

R1: Gatti 10/Ward 9
R2: Gatti 10/Ward 9
R3: Gatti 10/Ward 9 (very close, but Gatti still edged him out)
R4: Gatti 9/Ward 9 (point deducted for low blow)
R5: Gatti 10/Ward 10 (too close to call)
R6: Gatti 10/Ward 9
R7: Gatti 10/Ward 9
R8: Ward 10/Gatti 8 (Gatti down and almost out)
R9: Ward 10/Gatti 9 (Gatti hanging on for dear life)
R10: Gatti 10/Ward 9 (Ward all punched out, Gatti makes a comeback)

Total: Gatti 96-Ward 93

Don't see how Ward won this one at all. He almost KOed Thunder, but he didn't...

looking forward to seeing 2 and 3.

Gatti has been involved in a several exciting fights. Here's a couple more to look for...

Gatti / Ward II, III
Gatti / Robinson
Gatti / Wilson Rodriguez

Gatti-Robinson was even better IMO and as for Ward then try Ward-Neary and definately Ward-Burton.

To revive a looooooooooooong-dead thread, I'd like to say I agree pretty closely with this original poster's scoring of Gatti-Ward I. With these differences:
I gave Gatti a 10-8 in round 1... afterwards I felt a little silly for it, but I just didn't think Ward had done anything but get socked
I gave Ward round 5 10-9
And the 10-8 for Ward was the 9th, not the 8th.
So I came up with 95-92 Gatti (or, removing the initial 10-8, a 95-93).
Did you folks like the decision in that fight?

Corrales-Castillo was more exciting. I have never felt like I did at the end of that fight after any other fight. I was literally jumping up and down, drunk and lovin it.

Gatti-Ward I, when I watched that live. I was partly thinking that was the greatest fight i have ever watched. And part of me felt sick, like how can anyone go through something like that. It was amazingly brutal.

Gatti-Robinson I & II were def some hardcore fights, up there with the Gatti-Ward trilogy. Worth your time if you can find them on youtube...

Man, that fight still gives me goosebumps when I watch it. I'm so jealous of Paddy Considine and Jeff Lacy being ringside. I'd sell my soul to see that, or Lyle Foreman.

Does anyone remember gatti and calvin grove. Gatti was not defending his title that day but he took a beating and nearly lost.

i had this fight even. i'm not going to lie. after the final bell rang and they were hugging each other, my eyes started to water. corrales-castillo was on a higher level of skill but both fights defy what the human body is supposed to capable of.

The Gatti-Ward trilogy was great, though I would probably rank it fourth behind Morales-Barrera, Vazquez-Marquez and possibly Morales-Pacquiao ahead of it. And I would also probably rank it behind Morales-Barrera I, Corrales-Castillo I and Marquez-Vazquez III.

And, trust me, that's no slight against Gatti-Ward.

Gatti-Ruelas was a real good fight. Ward-Burton (Augustus) was one of the more beautifully violent fights I've ever seen. I thought Burton won it. And, as some already mentioned, I also can't say enough about Gatti-Robinson I and II, or is it Robinson-Gatti I and II. They really slaughtered each other in two great fights.

I feel like watching all these fights again right now...

Ever see Tszyu-Hurtado, I Feel Fine? Not on the level of those scorchers you mentioned, but horribly overlooked, as fiery affairs go.

Received Pacquiao-Marquez II in the mail, today. Look forward to scoring it later.

I haven't. Maybe I'll look to see if its on youtube.

Another thing about Gatti, even two of his last three fights against Damgaard and Baldomir were pretty exciting. The only Gatti fight that I've seen that bored me was his fight with Branco, though that was still a decent win. Mayweather gets criticized for fighting Gatti, but Gatti had a pretty decent winning streak going. That was another exciting fight with Gatti in it, though the excitement was provided by Mayweather that time.

Hell, even Gatti's fight with Oscar was pretty good. Gatti was an exciting bastard.

As for Ward, he obviously didn't have a lot of talent, but he was tough as hell, and I wouldn't want to take one of his body shots.

The first Gatti-Ward fight was great. The 2nd was alright. The 3rd was pretty good. The trilogy was pretty one-sided however. Ward won about 6 or 7 of the 30 rounds in the trilogy.

Morales-Barrera, Vasquez-Marquez, Bowe-Holyfield, and maybe Pacquiao-Morales were all better. At least Pac-Morales had 2 very good competitive bouts.

concerning the first fight between ward and gatti...
if you were to score it like any other fight you would come out with gatti winning but i like how ward got the decision cuz he pretty much had gatti TKOed in the 9th round

either way, GREAT F-ING FIGHT it really does send chills down your spine....

You know all of the fights between them were just examples of two guys with no defense pounding on one another....don't you? They were hardly great fights.
