Terrible injury for Toney, probably second worst injury he could have apart from a dislocated shoulder...

Torn Achilles heels never quite heal the same, it's a very serious injury, not so bad for Toney perhaps, seeing as he doesn't move much.

This is such a shit occurence, but I guess this is what happens when you get into your 30's, things snap.

Gutted that this fight is off, it was one I was looking forward to. I hope this isn't the end for Toney, I think he can comeback - but he isn't getting any younger.

Any news on whats happening to the bill. This was supposed to be an eliminator for some title (IBF?) will the sanctioning body find someone worthy for McCline to box-off. It does seem a pitty that he's done all the training for a chance at redemption and its gets taken away. Off course, no fault of Toney's.

I'm thinking maybe Monte Barrett might step in, I know he's got Guinn next - but he was runoured to be fighting Byrd for a while. He'll be in some shape and has got nothing to lose.

Guinn will have lots to lose, cause he's younger and has got more backing.

I hope Toney doesnt resort to eating himself upto 300lbs..maybe as soon as he gets that foot in a strap he should hit the weights ond put on another 20 or so lbs of muscle.

I'm gutted about this.....Toney has never been in this kind of shape for years if the training camp reports I read were true. This is a major setback and at 35 JT is gonna need to be extremely careful with what he does while recovering from the operation.

I was thinking over this last night and to be honest I'm not really too bothered about the cancellation of this fight (although I'm not at all pleased to see Toney so badly injured).

McCline is such a mediocre heavyweight, Toney would have had an absolute laugh in there. It was never really a match to get excited about. Had it been Toney vs Vladimir well that's something else entirely.

Fair enough, but what did you actually see happening in that fight? McCline possesses so little in the way of skill that Toney would've seen everything coming about 5 seconds before it was launched. The size issue to me is pretty meaningless too. Toney might be a former middleweight but that's a long time ago, he's every bit a heavyweight now and it's not like McCline has much of a punch for such a big man.

If Cedric Boswell can neutralize McCline so effectively for round after round using the most basic of defensive tactics I can't see where on earth the far superior Toney would have failed.

Gotta disagree - the size difference alone would have drawn sharp intakes of breath from even non-fight fans and it was a chance for Toney to put pressure on Jones.

With this fight Toney was making the statement - "I aint picking and choosing who I fight, I am here to stay" - it would have forced Jones into better matches, aswell as possibly adding credence to the idea that 'super heavyweights' are far from the division's future...

I agree Kilburn. This fight always seemed more like a circus attraction than a real heavyweight fight.
The size difference would make it a bit ridiculous, no matter what the result.
While I'd generaly never pick against Toney, these fights with super heavyweights just seem like a bad idea.
He's one of the most skilled performers we've seen in the last 20 years, but going in with these giants just has to be bad for his health.

I mean one of these guys is going to be able to land at some point, and I don't really want to see that.

Wlad / Toney is another fight I don't want to see - he should pick on someone his own size.

That's all very well but it doesn't make Toney v McCline a good fight, which is what we're looking for ultimately.

And I think you mean height difference more than size difference. Like I said Toney is nothing like a middleweight any more.

Fights that capture my imagination are the one's which contain imponderables - the "what ifs", and this fight was jam pack loaded with them.

The height difference (and a weight differential of in excess of 40 lbs Kilburn...) was the obvious one as well as giving us a glimpse how past, smaller great fighters may deal with a modern top 20 behemoth.

What would happen if McCline connected with a full blooded right hand?
Would McCline come out aggresive against such a smaller foe?
Could Toney's counterpunching overcome such disadvantages?

This fight could have turned out to be a snoozer due to styles, but in the build up it has had me salivating and counting down the days.

When you're hit on the chin full blooded by a 20 stone guy you're in deep shit. This would be the case with any heavyweight too I think, let alone a beefed up middleweight.

As it is, I thought Toney would just outbox the overrated giant with ease. I don't think McCline has the balls to deal with a fighter like Toney.
Other giants, like Lewis, would be a different mattter.

I don't find that prospect interesting at all. Toney rarely gets caught with a flush punch and that's hardly likely to change suddenly against a fighter as limited as McCline, who isn't even a puncher anyway.

I'm well aware of the huge weight "advantage". My point about the size difference is that while sure it might look significant (until the first bell sounds at least) but Toney would not be dwarfed as badly as some think. Did Toney look small against Holyfield? Would Holyfield have looked tiny against McCline?

Hey sorry to those who were really looking forward to this, I just don't see it as a great loss. Toney's injury is the really sad part, not the cancellation of this "showdown".

As Terry has said, there are a number of what ifs.

Would the 'master' boxer James Toney have been able to over come the massive physical advantages that he is giving away to Jameel. This would be the first time we have seen one of these new ex-middleweights stand and trade blows with a super-heavyweight, as you all know Toney is not going to be dancing round the ring picking him off, he is going to stand in front of him and bob and weave and try to knock Jameel out. Would Jameel go in there and try to KO' Toney or would he just try and stick him on the end of his jab all night? if, so how would Toney overcome this?

It also sends a message out that he is not doing what RJJ has done/is doing i.e. picking opponents who are tailor made for him, Lightsout is doing what he is saying he was going to do anybody, anywhere, anytime.

This IMO was a unique fight and something we might not ever see again (judging by the seriousness of the injury). It is quite possible the fight could have been boring, but there is nobody on the planet who can say with 100% conviction what would have happened on Feb 7th, and now we might never find out

I was eagerly anticipating this fight, more so than any other currently scheduled bout and I am distraught that it has been cancelled

Surprised you viewed this one as such a straight forward outing for Lightsout.
He is my favourite fighter currently trading leather, but I was far from certain he would emerge victorious.
Good point regarding the injury - I really hope it doesn't signal an end to Toney's resurgent career.
