okay, I've seen a little youtube footage but thats about it, and I don't know enough about his record to say much, really.

so, educate me. i see him figuring in people's top 5 lightweights, what were his biggest wins, what were his attributes as a fighter, etc etc etc?

I think he is finally is getting his due. Many of the greats of the 1960s (Vincente Saldiviar, Bob Foster, Eder Jofre, Fighting Harada etc) just seem to be ignored.

Probably because the great Muhammad Ali robbed the attention, I guess.

Which fight you guys think that was this great Puerto Rican fighter his defining moment? Was it his fight with the great Joe Brown? Or was it his rematch win versus Ismael Laguna in San Juan, Puerto Rico?

Has anybody seen his rematch fight with Laguna? Do you guys know who has that fight on tape or for sale?

Not sure. AFAIK their 2nd fight wasn't taped or if it was, it doesn't seem to exist. The 1st and 3rd fights do though.

I have Ortiz' autograph somewhere, nice item.

If the fight was televised- it was part of the Bill Cayton/ Jim Jacobs "Big Fights Inc" collection. They had the rights to all those films. Bill Cayton Jr -not too long ago- sold those films en masse to EsPN/Disney who now holds ownership rights to all those classics from many years of boxing history. (You might have seen ESPN Classic Fights on late at night ?)
Bill Cayton Jr is a very nice gentleman. It was strictly a business deal that was a pay-off for a lifetime of work by his father and Jim who had passed on by now.

Disney(at present time) do not use them to make-up box sets for sale to public. They can be petitioned to be asked for as clips to appear in films, documentaries etc etc.. Films that you see on the market that are on sale to the public from various dealers on the web, are copies made from television, or copies from films direct.

Jim Jacobs supplied my father with copies of the 16mm original films from a handful of my fathers televised fights. Many, Many fighters received their own personal copies of their fights from Jim as well over the years. We were simply asked not to release them for TV viewing. He still held the rights to the individual reels.

Over the years, as these film qualities ran down- torn film, burnt or frayed cells- many fighters sold their films to various collectors in exchange for copies enhanced on VHS tapes or DVDs (depending on years) which was easier or better for the fighters to use.

Hence, a huge market on films by collectors, with or without some of the best fights still held by Espn/Disney. Every now and then-a film will show up out of the closet or attic space from a collector from way back.

Oh no doubt, it probably does exist somewhere, just it's not in the public domain or readily available where the majority of the other fights are.
