I know a lot of you don't frequent that forum and I wanted your opinions on a blog I wrote in response to a casual fan asking me what's wrong with Boxing.

Just a stream of conciosness thought......A worsening economy would make "fighting" more symbolic and thus more palatable/popular. IMHO. Who knows....perhaps the western cultures may just re-embrace masculinity under such circumstances. I'm not knockin' femininity at all, in fact like many of us, I find myself obssessed with the subject on occasion lol.... but I'm tired of having them equated in some circles with right/wrong, which seems a clear and prevalant perversion of the current age.

A good perspective of what the true fan feels. As Ezzard said, the proliferation of titles is a point worth mentioning, though the other points you highlight, like preserving the '0', match-making etc are probably more of an issue, these days. Though the various Super, Silver, Emirates titles etc no doubt turn fans away.

Would Ray Robinson, indeed, fight 20 times a year if he was earning 20-30mill per fight? Would these guys have been as good as they were if they only fought 30-40 times in their respective careers? Begs the question, would a Mayweather, for example, be a genuinely better fighter if he had amassed, to date, a ledger along the lines of 115-2-2?

A good journeyman is hard to find as a result of this. I won't render more judgement, but this is about as solid a fact as you're going to find.

Multiple belts are just a huge annoyance and creates a gulf of confusion for the fan base. But I suppose it rewards some by offering everybody their own boutique "champion". Once again see my statement above. "Losses" are simply not understood as part of a great champions learning curve. Can you imagine a Jersey Joe getting a shot these days?

Do you think that 'Feminization' is also a direct source for 'instant gratification' society is embroiled in?

Instant success and all that, partly why the '0' is so important? Nobody likes losers or are much less tolerable these days?

Just looking for some different perspectives on this.

"Feminization" & "instant gratification" may not be releated when you look at the face of it... But in boxing terms, they are certainly going along the same lines.

Fighters who have an O at the ned of their careers probably won't have fought at the top level. (Though some have Marciano, Mayweather, Calzaghe).

i think you hit the nail on the head there, it was HBO (and subsequently Showtime) that was the big gamechanger.

Not really much question that HBO and to a lesser extent Showtime really has run boxing for a long time now. There is a lot of good that they could do for the sport but don't.

If they did more cross-promotion with the other networks (CBS, CNN, TBS, etc.) for ALL of their fights it would help immensely. I thought HBO was getting on the right track when they started up that "Ring Life" series but they've all but ceased promoting it and just show it randomly on HBO between movies and on HBO on demand.

The Dewey Bozella thing is a fantastic example of the kind of great stories that can be sold to the masses and consumed. His fight has tens of thousands of hits on YouTube that I've seen and was heavily publicized on ESPN and such. They need to get Boxing back on Sportscenter and in the mouths of pundits between the NBA and NFL again.

In classic Shakespearean double-entendre with the O...O a reference to female nudey bits - Buzz's reference to the 0 links to feminization of boxing as the same schematic representation of the vagina.

Perhaps I was wrong, though.

So I guess when somebody finally puts a "1" after the "L" on a fighter's official record it's akin to "fornicating his record up."

People are thinking......and that's rarely a bad thing.
