Next move for Burns.....

So.... that's twice I've picked Burns to be dominated and KTFO, I won't be doing it again.

After the Martinez win I think it's fair to say that we were all a bit underwhelmed (to say the least) with the choices of opponents for him in his subsequent three fights, and so too perhaps was Ricky himself.

Hopefully this time they'll actually put him in with the kind of fighters that he ought to be facing if he wants to consider himself world class.

Who would you want him in with next?

Obviously Burns mentioned Marquez, a fight I can't really see being made, but there is plenty of options out there for him, mainly Stateside which will be of concern to Allegedly.

A lot depends on how confident Warren is that Burns will fill an arena in Scotland really - because he needs to in order to create the kind of money needed to possibly entice a top guy over. The fight I'd most like to see would probably be with Guerrero, who I think is a quality champion, but there would be value in fights against DeMarco or Escovedo.

But, well, hate to say it - Gavin Rees? Mitchell? Murray? There are Allegedly a lot of British figters around that level...

Summed it up really.

Got all the time for Ricky but it would appear that he was being served up softies to suck the Scottish pound note for a long as possible.

The Nicky cook farce, then withdrawing from broner did him no favours but last night redeemed him completely.

I think he should look to America / Mexico for a name as there aren't any in Europe.

I dont doubt for a minute that The Katsidis fight couldve sold out most venues in scotland.
Warren put Burns in against nobodys in Braehead arena for £50 a ticket. Thats never gonna succeed.

A decent name, a decent venue at a decent price and it would sell no problem if advertised and hyped properly.

My money is on a Burns-Mitchell first defence in Glasgow.

i agree with the domestic names - a few good 'uns at lightweight. especially mitchell, after being unable to fight brandon rios, and murray, if he does well vs rios.

one thing, well done to burns beating a 2nd world class opponent. however, top guys are supposed to beat katsidis, who always loses the big ones.

A couple of big domestic fights with Mitchell and Murray and a rematch with Arthur in Scotland would really help to build his following and give him more leverage in getting fights with the big names over the pond.

Its time to step on the gas now, Burns is ready for it. No doubt Warren will hold him back!

burns next defence should be in Scotland, sneaking suspicion if Limond beats Crolla (big ask i know) he would use him as burns first defence?

It depends on a few things, there are possible fights that could happen with domestic rivals, but this would need Kevin Mitchell to be ok to box (any news on his licence standing?), John Murray to win against Rios and Limond to beat Crolla and look good doing so.

Burns could then fight one of those guys.

Burns has to be one of the most improved current British fighters. and i think that he will sell out in Scotland if FW can deliver a big name opponent. i'm pretty sure that there generally aren't many spare seats when he fought in the Braehend anyway....
The Braehead looked almost empty last time he boxed there.

Got a horrible feeling Ricky and Billy might get talked into a rematch with Alex Arthur as a homecoming pride of Scotland type of fight.

Hope not, he needs to keep the momentum going, The WBO have ruled that Marquez must face Burns if he returns to the lightweight division, if ever Ricky is going to fight
him it would be the perfect time because he is likely to take a shellacking from Pacquaio so perhaps March in Scotland lots of money he might come over you never know.

More likely is that Marquez will vacate and then almost anything could happen. The mitchell fight will be want frank is after but Kevin has to get sorted and get his licence back therefore Ricky
has to keep his title for that fight to happen so any first defence is likely to be low risk.

One thing that baffled me about saturday night was the complete lack of promotion for the event in the Wembley area. We turned up at 5:30 to meet a mate that had been to Wembley Stadium to watch England v Australia in the Rugby League. So that meant about 30,000 odd australian sports fans on the doorstep of a venue where the most well known current australian boxer (apart from Mundine) was fighting in a (interim) world title fight. It wouldn't have taken much to convince a healthy number of those fans that a night at the boxing would be a decent prospect.

No adverts in the rugby match programme, no posters or signage. It all seemed very amateurish. I'm sure Warren knows what he's doing, having been top of the business for 30 odd years, but the masses of empty seats (not to mention the free tickets given away) could have been sold on to interested passing trade, of which there would have been more than usual for a Scot fighting an Aussie in North London.

It'll be Mitchell next for the interim WBO title. I can also see Warren putting Murray in with Katsidis, with the intention of a play off between the winners. Especially if Murray somehow beats Rios.

The thing that needs to be remembered is the changing TV environment. Warren needs to service the allegedly schedule meaning his fighters are almost certainly not going to be seen on other Promoters cards (Sky TV). A series of in-house fights between Mitchell, Burns and Murray is surely the most realistic prospect.

There was rumours Mitchell might move.

How many do you think were there? I thought it emptied a bit for Groves fight due to the lateness.

Don't know how many it holds, but there were maybe a couple of thousand of empty seats.

I thought the timings were pretty bad - couldn't believe they put on a 6 rounder (George Carmen) between the Saunders and Burns fights. I guess that was driven by TV scheduling to have the UK card flow into the Canada card. Thought it pretty strange that Groves - Smith was last fight on. And as usual there was no information on what was happening thoughout the night. That's not a FWP criticism, boxing generally is pretty ropey at looking after the attending fans. Given the exorbitant ticket prices for boxing, that's a real disappointment.

The arena was curtained off in half. Of that half, maybe at best it was 80% full? Some fairly large sections were totally empty.

I was quite glad the Groves fight ended early because with the engineering works on the tube it meant chopping and changing and it would have been a mare getting back anywhere had that fight gone 12 rounds.

I think fighting Mitchell would be a backward step for Burns. Of course, just because Katsidis destroyed Mitchell doesn't mean that Burns would do the same. I'm sure the fight would sell too and provide both with a decent payday. But Burns has worked so hard and improved so much that to go from fighting a guy of Katsidis stature to fighting a guy who was blown away in his one and only fight at world level just doesn't make sense to me.

Burns looked absolutely massive at LW, some of Kats shots up close were literally just bouncing off Ricky. I think he should be looking to make a tough defence or at the other belt holders at LW - not back at the likes of Mitchell. If Mitchell follows up the Murray win at a high level and keeps out of trouble, it's a natural fight before Burns moves to 140 which I think he will eventually

I'm really pleased for him, he's got to be the most improved British boxer of late...

Capacity about 12,000 for the venue. So about 5,000 there then. I stayed up learnt from the Fury fight about poor transport out of there. The timings of fights should be posted over the venue just like in clubs in the past with dj set times.
