Who are some of the hardest punchers to never win a title? Cleveland Williams and Earnie Shavers immediately come to mind among the heavies. Who else can anyone name? :P

Quite a list, more than a few.

I know that McAvoy and Stribling were Murderous punchers.

40's heavyweight elmer ray was a good banger. once in an exhibition with joe louis he hit the bomber a little harder than he should have and louis flattened him .

maybe there should be a question mark after young stribling's name. he toured the country running up a string of kayoes against questionable opponents, such as his chauffer and against others who got knocked out more than once but under assumed names, although the rumor that one of them was judy garland is probably false.

there was an ametur named nick wells who got stopped by duane bobick..in the amateurs who never even made it to main even status in the pros...fat, didn't train..southpaw...but he was as hard a hitter as i have ever seen. an extreme example of the satterfield/shavers syndrome...if he got you first, and early it was usually farewell for the evening, but he was tired as early as the second round and had no defense. has anyone here ever seen him ..in either the pros or amateurs?

True, Stribling did tour the tank towns in which he scored a lot of knockouts, but he also knocked out a number of quality heavyweights as well. Not the hardest of all time, but hard enough to send nearly 130 out. Also, the biggest percentage of his KO wins were clean knockouts and not of the TKO variety.

David Tua :D never really won a "real" title. Intercontinental title? Sorry, this is boxing, not the WWE.

If Young Stribling scored a lot of knockouts in his career, how come he wasn't ranked in the Ring Magazine the 100 Greatest Punches of All-Time?

Don't you have some boxer heights to worry about? Just kidding!
The answer to your question is simple though, because the "Ring Top 100" is purely opinion and just because it’s listed in a magazine, it doesn’t make it gospel. Stribling may not have been one of the 100 best punchers, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't a hard puncher. I've researched Stribling's career very thoroughly and I can honestly tell you that he certainly had a hard punch, whether he is worthy of top 100…I've never gave it much thought. I haven't seen the "Ring 100" list but I would be interested to know who the writer, or writers are that chose the list and in what chronology the fighters are listed. Anyone can sit down and put lists together, but I wonder how often the same people sit through hours and hours of pouring through newspaper clips thoroughly researching all of the fighters that they list and how many people just compare the lists of other historians and compile their list in that manner? In my opinion the top ten should look something like, and yes I have spent hours upon hours researching the careers of the fighters mentioned:

"Barbados" Joe Walcott, Sam Langford, Jimmy Wilde, Bob Fitzsimmons, George "KO" Chaney, Ruben Olivares, Jack Dempsey, Terry McGovern, Joe Louis, Mike Tyson

But then again, I can name ten more boxers who were just as worthy:

Aurelio Herrera, Danny Lopez, Carlos Zarate, Peter Maher, Archie Moore, "Sugar" Ray Robinson, Earnie Shavers, Georges Carpentier, Lew Jenkins, Max Baer.

Who's to say that any one of the second batch should not be in the top ten. Or how about:

Sandy Saddler, George Odwell, George Foreman, Benny Lynch, Bob Satterfield, Tommy Gomez, Roberto Duran, Wilfredo Gomez, Al Foreman, Henry Armstrong.

See, the list can go on and on until a person goes through enough fighters that they eventually reach “Slapsie” Maxie Rosenbloom. It’s all opinion, no matter how much research has been done, and it’s very hard for historians today to even choose old time fighters because what film does exist of early days, it cannot be determined what kind punchers the old timers were, all we can do is make a decent educated guess as to punching prowess of the past! Personally, my favorite time in boxing was probably 1895 to 1910, but no matter how many newspaper reports that I read, I will never see the knockout punch of an Aurelio Herrera, or Terry McGovern, nor will I ever see how debilitating the punches of “Barbados” Joe Walcott, or Joe Choynski were…I can just imagine and if I ever write articles on any of the guys that I am fond of, I can only hope that I give an honest account of their career on what I read from writers of the time!

Don't forget that murderous punching heavyweight legend Jeff Candy Slim Merritt. There was a write up on the guy recently:

By Jim Amato
He began his career in 1964 but it was not until 1973 that he crashed into the heavyweight ratings. In between were periods of inactivity and a multitude of meaningless bouts. He was a murderous, punching prospect that no worthy opponent wanted to chance his career against. By the time he got his “shot” at the big time, he was 21-1 with 16 kayos. He scored seven 1st round kayos and eight 2nd round stoppages. Yet up to this point his claim to fame was being a Muhammad Ali sparring partner. It is a shame that today very few remember Jeff "Candy Slim” Merritt.

True, his tenure as a mainstream contender was less than a year but oh what a reputation he had. Many at that time considered him the hardest puncher in the heavyweight division, bar none.

Although Jeff had one bout in 1964 his career really began in 1968. In 1969 Jeff established himself as a legitimate prospect with decision wins over Ray Williams, Roger Russel and Henry Clark. Finally on September 10th, 1973, Jeff stepped into the ring to face former W.B.A. heavyweight champion Ernie Terrell.

“Big” Ernie had held the W.B.A. title from 1965 to 1967 before losing a unification fight with Ali. He then lost to Thad Spencer in the W.B.A. eight man elimination tourney and followed with a kayo victory over Jose Luis Garcia. Despite a very controversial loss to Chuck Wepner, Ernie was still ranked when he faced Merritt. Less then one round later Ernie was a retired ex-champion as Jeff destroyed him. Jeff followed this with a three round butchering of rugged Ron Stander.

Jeff kept his name in the headlines serving as Earnie Shavers sparring partner while Earnie prepared for his bout with Jerry Quarry. Archie Moore was training Shavers and he allowed Merritt to spar with Earnie. A couple of vicious hooks caused the Quarry bout to be postponed, as Earnie’s jaw was broken.

Don King, Earnie’s manager was livid. Archie was dismissed and Quarry’s trainer Gil Clancey said something to the effect that Merritt was the kind of guy you fought for money, not in the gym.

All was going well until March 4th, 1974. Jeff faced old foe Henry Clark. This time Clark abandoned his usual cautious style and took Jeff by surprise. Jeff was now the victim of a one round kayo loss. The defeat put Jeff’s career into a tale spin. It was almost 2 1/2 years before he would fight again. His opponent would be tough fringe contender Stan Ward.

For two rounds Jeff outboxed the ponderous Ward, shutting one of his eyes. In round three the half blind Ward connected and again Jeff’s chin betrayed him. The bout was soon stopped and Ward had handed Jeff his ticket to boxing oblivion.

barry...your comments, obviously based on a lot of study..about stribling were so interesting i checked him out on boxrec and it has a lot of interesting comments about some of his fights. i read about him over the years ...long articles...long ago and i wish i could remember more of what i read. is there a bio anywhere, or an anthology about various fighters with much space devoted to him? he...and his mama and papa were such a lively trio that so much was written about that aspect of his life that his ability as a fighter was kind of ignored.

There is a biography called, "King of the Canebrakes," on Stribling, a name that I believe Damon Runyon gave Stribling because of all of Stribs touring of small “Tank” towns throughout the country, usually knocking out the towns heavyweight. I’ve never read it, but I’ve heard that it’s a good read. I need to update the record that I have for Stribling, but below is what I currently have with a few fight notes. I have a ton of notes on Stribling in which I hope to write an in-depth article about his career some day. Right now, I’m working through the career of “Barbados” Joe Walcott, now there was a real puncher, one of the top five hardest punchers of all time in my opinion. Anyway, If you like I’ll e-mail the Stribling record to you, as the format here will probably make it difficult to cipher through.

He goes on to say that Maj. John Paul Jones, head of the committee of the American Legion that staged the fight was responsible for grabbing both his and Stribling’s arms and raising them in the air. whew..that was fast!!!! thanks....and no email is necessary...this reads just fine. i remember that canebrakes title now...maybe i'll dig for it.

i've always been intrigued by barbados joe walcott. his height is listed at five feet, one inch...yet he fought heavyweights!!!! i just can't visualize this. if he were around today and fought lennox lewis, his over hand right would be a low blow! he was supposed to have had a long reach...so wouldn't the referee constantly be wiping his gloves clean, from dragging on the canvas? 'tis baffling indeed.

Walcott did fight a few heavyweights, which I have newspaper clips for over 75% of his career, I'm lacking stuff on the first couple of years that he fought. His bout with Choynski is always referred as against a heavyweight, but in reality, Choynski was around 168, but like Walcott he often fought very successfully against much larger men than himself. The bout was the pinnacle of Walcott's career though as he dominated Choynski from start to finish. I guess the biggest guy that Walcott fought, or at least what I have knowledge of was against Fred Russell, a big heavyweight from Chicago who was around 6' 2" and weighed in around 230, compared to Walcott's 5' 1" and around 155 lbs.. There was a picture in a 70s, or 80s Ring mag that had a photo of Carlos Zarate and Duane Bobick, and Bobick looked like a giant compared to Zarate, which I’m sure is similar to what Walcott did against Russell. Walcott decked Russell in the first round, but after that Russell was content to jab and stay out of the “Demon’s” reach. Sandy Ferguson was a big heavyweight also that Walcott fought. I’m not sure what Walcott’s actual reach was, but I should have it somewhere. Sam Langford had a similar body style like Walcott, huge barrel chest and shoulders.

Barbados Joe Walcott is mentioned in Hemingway's famous short story, "Fifty Grand":

http://www.boxrec.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11524

Walcott apparently had heavyweight-sized arms on a short stocky body. Here's a picture:

Feb 23 vs. Joe Choynski—Going into the bout, Choynski was a 5 to 1 favorite over Walcott. Choynski weighed 163, while Walcott came in at 140. Choynski was also a foot taller than the “Barbados Demon,” but the advantages meant nothing to Walcott. Choysnki was severely beaten in every round that the bout lasted. In the first round Walcott delivered a hard shot to the stomach, which dropped Choynski to his knees. When Choynski got up he was met with two shot’s, one to the body and one to the jaw. He was again sent to the floor after Walcott landed another right hand on the jaw. Choynski regained his footing only to be knocked down again from a left and right to the face and Choynski stayed down the limit. With three knockdowns in the bag, Walcott moved in for the finish and had it not been for the bell ending the round, Choynski probably would have been counted out. Rounds two, three and four saw Choynski land a few good shots, but when the fifth round rolled around most of the “fight” was already beaten out of Joe and he had to resort to clinching just to remain on his feet. Walcott dished out some hard punishment in the seventh round and a left to the jaw dropped Choynski. After rising, Choynski tried to hold on to the whirlwind that was Walcott, but to no avail. Walcott broke through and landed another left that had Choynski is such a bad condition that referee, Johnny White, stopped the bout 38 seconds into the seventh round and declared Walcott the winner. Joe Walcott Knocked Out!
Young Peter Jackson stops Barbados negro in four rounds.
Baltimore, June 10 -- Young Peter Jackson knocked out Joe Walcott in the fourth round of their ten round bout tonight before the Eureka Athletic Club. A right punch to the stomach put the Barbados Wonder down and out.
Tonight was the fifth time the men have met. In 1901 Walcott won a 20 round decision over Jackson in Baltimore. In 1902, the two fought a slashing six round bout in Philadelphia without a verdict and met again in Baltimore where their bout was again declared a draw. The fourth time they met in Portland where another draw verdict was declared. Tonight's bout however, left little room for debate as to who is the better man and marked the setting of Walcott's pugilistic sun.
Champion Joe Gans seconded Jackson along with Al Hereford, Ray Watkins and Harry Lyons.

Jan 7 Jimmy Gardner Boston, MA L 12 PG
--GARDINER'S JABS WON
Jimmy Gardiner, of Lowell, Mass., who has been boxing with succcess throughout the West during the past year, made his first appearance in some time at the initial entertainment of the Armory Athletic Association at Boston, Mass., on January 7, in a twelve-round bout with ex-champion welterweight, Joe Walcott, in the presence of a large and select crowd.
Walcott did all the forcing. He rushed Gardiner time and again, but the Lowell boxer gave a superb exhibition of defensive fighting and continually stabbed the ex-champion with a long hard left.
Walcott charged repeatedly and swung his left and right over and over again, but Jimmy stopped the blows with his arm or glove or elbow or threw his head so that the blows went around. This went on round after round. The black fighter did not land a dozen hard blows.
Walcott was ready at the clubhouse to weigh in at the specific weight, but Gardiner, so the club directors claim, refused to step on the scales. Gardiner looked worn and was about six inches taller than Joe.
Joe was not himself by any means, but was vicious. Three times he complained that Gardiner hit low, but Referee Sheehan didn't allow, and some of the spectators thought he was reaady at times to take his seat. But he stuck to his guns and even smiled as if disgusted when the decision went to the opposite corner.
Gardiner used his left hand all the time, and seemed to hit Walcott with it at will, usually on the nose or mouth, although three or four times each round he would half hook it to the side of Joe's head. He plunged the left jab for Joe's body, but Joe was cunning enough to draw in as a turtle does his head on most of these ocassions. In one round in the middle of the contest Gardiner jabbed Walcott nineteen times on the head with the left. This a fair average of the whole contest. And he always beat Joe to the punch when John assayed that kind of lead.
During the whole battle Gardiner must have pumped a lest two hundred of these blows on the Black Demon's physiognomy. Walcott woke up and chased harder in the last three rounds, and while he may have landed on Gardiner, did not land effectively.
Gardner once in a while let drive with a right for Joe's ribs, and five times started to mix up with right and left swings with his opponent. There was much clinching during the bout, and Gardiner did all the effective infighting and short arm close range work.
Even on the breakaway he was quicker than Joe and several times walloped. But none of the blows were hard. Jimmy did not do much firing of the battle, but was content with shooting the left on when he found Joe ready for it. Joe was rushed, but atleast ten time was several feet wide of the mark.--Police Gazette.

Damn, Barry, you think I have time to read your PhD dissertation while I'm at work? :D You must've done a lot of legwork for those.

Off-topic, but this thread reminded me to bring it up: re. the records, of these all-time greats, I've always thought a classic picture of the fighter would be a great thing to add to the record. The individual-fight records could include links to fight pictures and/or video clips, and to text exceprts from newspaper articles of the day. Obviously that would be a nontrivial long-term kind of project, but IMO it would greatly enrich the content of the site. Do any of the other editors have suggestions along these lines? JohnShep?

I always put the picture of a fighter at the top of all the records that I have in Word format, that is the pictures that I have available. I think that it would really make a record stand out if pictures of the fighter could be added, like most of the records on the CBZ website. I don't know if they still publish a record book, but several years ago the International Brotherhood of Prizefighters published a record book and the format of their records is, in my opinion, some of the best ever published. They have a website that has two of their records on it, Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley, but it shows the format that they use, which is fantastic.

The records on Boxrec are very similar and are also some of the best, in my opinion, that there are out there.

In response to Kovit as to why wasn't Stribling in the Ring 100 best punchers and to add more reason to my response, I just went through some old Boxing Illustrated mags and the April 1993 issue has Boxing's Present 10 Heaviest Hitters and another list compiled by Herb Goldman, of the Hardest Punchers Pound-for_Pound in History and Goldman has Stribling listed at #14 of all-time. I would not rate Strib that high, but he should certainly be right up there, especially in the top 100, but like I said before...it's entirely opinion!
