Here is some rare footage of J.J Jeffries training for the Ruhlin fight.
check out the movements at 60 seconds into it.
I remember years ago my elderly neighbours who lived across the street
from me in a subdivision use to let their 40 year old son out of the basement out at night and he use to do these movements out on their front lawn at 2 in the morning for about half an hour,
except he didnt have
any bar bells and wasnt training for any fight (I dont think).

anyone know whom it is that J.J Jeffries is sparring with in that training clip?
according to a film cataloge, some footage of
Gus Ruhlin sparring with Denver Ed Martin was also filmed when he was training
to fight Jeffries, but possibly it may been lost over time.

If memory serves, his sparring partners for the Ruhlin fight were Bob Armstrong, Joe Kennedy and Jack Jeffries. It's either Joe or Jack, but the film is too grainy to be sure.

This fight was (at the time)consdierered one of the most disappointing heavyweight title fights.Ruhlin reportedly just collaspsed in the fifth round
from no telling blow.
The only real reason I mentioned the anniversary of it is because it was a filmed fight.
Jeffries trained at Harbin Springs for it.
Ruhlin in Oakland.

It wasn't reported in any of the newspapers at the time, but according to DeWitt Van Court - one of Jeffries's cornermen - it was Ruhlin himself who threw in the sponge. Van Court said he was watching Ruhlin's corner. He reported that when Madden climbed into the ring, he set the sponge down next to Ruhlin's foot. Van Court said that Ruhlin saw the sponge, reached down, grabbed it, and flipped it into the center of the ring - thus signaling defeat. He recounted this event in his book, The Making of Champions in California.

The result created a lot of controversy because it was the first time in the MQ era that a fighter had quit on his stool between rounds in a championship fight. That just wasn't done in those days, and Ruhlin was tagged as a coward.

Would someone make a thread of all the chapters of
MY STORY OF MY LIFE
by James J. Jeffries
that appeared in the many chapters published
in the newspapers in the Spring of 1910?
I think it should be made into a E-book
here for historical reference.
Someone here did it here earlier with John L. Sullivan's
life story that was published in the newspapers.
Im not sure how many chapters there were to MY STORY OF MY LIFE.
But possibly it would be a lot of links to the newspaper chapters in chronologolical
order.

It was published in book form as My Life and Battles by James J. Jeffries. It was actually written by Bob Edgren (he's listed as "editor" on the cover), but unlike a lot of those newspaper autobiographies, this one was pretty accurate when you compare it to other contemporaneous sources.

Edgren and Jeff were very close friends. They became acquainted when Edgren was in Carson City for the Fitz-Corbett fight, and Edgren spent time in Corbett's camp sparring with him as a newspaper correspondent. (Edgren was an outstanding collegiate ahtlete.) Edgren was a natural choice as ghostwriter since he knew Jeff so well. That's probably why the book is as accurate as it is.

You can get it the book version through interlibrary loan.

1. It's a lousy book - not well written and full of mistakes.
2. You can get it through interlibrary loan with your library card.
