The term legend is such an overused description of people it's hard to take it seriously sometimes. But in Mickey Carneys case nothing could be further from the truth. A good man, a true gentleman, a great boxing man, a legend. Night God Bless Treasure.

X

Dean Powell first introduced me to Mick about 17 years ago. At the time I was working for Frank Maloney but travelling back to Reading to box. I never thought I'd find a club like that in London.

The Fitzroy Lodge looks like a film set and Mick always reminded me of a star from a classic old black and white movie. He was always dapper, immaculately dressed in a suit, even as he swept the floor of his beloved gym. He was a gentleman, dry, funny and didn't suffer fools but he absolutely loved everyone who proudly wore the famous black and white vest - although he tried very hard to hide it.

He wasn't judgemental but everyone wanted to win his approval, he helped every kid that walked into that railway arch to become a better person.

He basically lived under that railway arch, with the keep fitters and black cab drivers during the day and then the amateurs in the evening. If you ever boxed for the club you kept popping back to hit the same bags - only much slower. Perhaps he let his guard down a bit when you'd stopped fighting. He'd lead you by the arm towards his office, ask if you had you're kit, his jazz music on the stereo only interrupted when a train went by overhead, he'd roll his eyes at your stories and roll up a bandage as you huffed and puffed around the polished wooden floor. When you were done he'd make you a mug of tea.

He never seemed to really age - he already seemed old in the pictures on the wall from 50 years ago and it felt like he'd stay that way forever.

Lovely man, taught me how to jab and when it was a bit sloppy told me to imagine I was playing a trombone and sliding the thingy out and back. Straight out and straight back. Baam!

RIP Sir

Mick was a real great guy, whom had time & advice 4 everyone, and was also a big supporter of mine, whom always gave me great advice over the last 25 years. I remember with great affection the period in the mid-late nineties when we used the Lodge as a our training base during the daytime.
Thanx Mick 4 all your time you gave 2 us all & boxing has lost a 'LEGEND OF A MAN' R.I.P MY FRIEND "GOD BLESS YOU"
