British fights being cancelled

Right, this might be coincidence but here goes.

I help run the prediction league on this site and one of the most annoying things is to select fights for the fight list for them to get cancelled.

In the month of November, we selected 29 fights in total, 16 involving international fighters and 13 involving British fighters, most of which are all British fights.

so far, of the 16 international fights selected, all 16 have gone or going ahead where as the British fights, out of the 13 we had down, 6 have been cancelled.

Just coincidence or are British fights more likey to pull out of fights than big International fights?

It is the single biggest irritant to me in British boxing. Nothing worst than buying tickets for a show only to see the end bill looking nothing like it did when you make the decision to buy. Happens all the time with FW shows.

For ease of reference, could you list the cancellations, Josh?

Chisora v Larry
Kid Galahad v Willie Casey
Selby v Simpson
Price v McDermott
Power v Donnelly (This was only pulled as the Price bill was cancelled but still annoying)
Buckland v Truscott

Aye, bit of a bad month. Was expecting most to be political bollocks but at least four of those were injury related.

So do you reckon its purely coincidence? Or are us Brits a bit softer than most?

Murder when it comes to previewing in a monthly, we have to commit way ahead and then when something gets cancelled we never get the chance to put it right. We produced a whole supplement one, 16 pager for the original Tyson-Holyfield date, suicidal when that got pulled

A lot of it is politics - look at the number of 'injuries' boxers have compared to MMA guys, for example. It's utterly disproportionate and in reality I feel the majority are 'smokescreens' driven by promotional interests, rankings issues etc.

OUCH! On the bright side from a historiography perspective I bet that it gives some interesting insights into the feeling towards the bout at the time and how contemporary writers though it might have gone years earlier than it originally did.

Would be an interesting read actually.

I never thought of it from the perspective of the sports writers, but it must be beyond a nightmare for you guys.

An interesting counterpoint to this is that fights almost never get cancelled in Asia.

Very good point. Cancelling of fights must impact alot of people. Doesn't affect me in the slightest, just really annoys me

I would say cancellations are more common in Britain than anywhere else. Why this is, I don't know. Probably all the reasons are legit or at lease have their basis in legitimacy but the boxers themselves and/or their teams are reluctant to risk fighting under anything less than optimal conditions.

On the other side of the spectrum, it's almost unheard of for fights in Japan or Thailand to be called off. The only instances I can think in recent history were a couple of cards being called off due to natural disasters (Japanese tsunami and Thai floods), but not because of injury or illness to boxers. Perhaps the consequences of cancellations are much greater in Asia than in the UK. I can't speak for Japan, but pro boxing in Thailand is mostly funded by sponsors so maybe the promoters don't want to risk upsetting their paymasters.

And there is still another week for more to be cancelled as well, although the Curtis Woodhouse bill should defo be going ahead. We hope.

For sure, Deserter.

I think the cancellations above are a bit unusual in that most of them ARE genuine injuries/illnesses, I think

Sky pulling due to hattons not finding a sufficient replacement headliner?

For me, this is where we need all our promoters to be a little more joined up. Its not fair on the undercard fights to get scrapped if a headline fight gets cancelled
