According to Joe Louis in his 1978 autobiography MY LIFE.
"Annie Mitchell"(not her real name)
Joe Louis had once said that meeting her was one of the biggest mistakes of his life.
He was asked to look her up by a friend when he went to Beaumont Texas
in early 1958 when he was to ref a wrestling match.
According to Joe Louis, she was the one who got him hooked on drugs
and had connections to the Mafia(as a pick-up for their money).
Check out pages 237-240 in MY LIFE for the(almost)full story.
wow it is strange.

Its seems odd that some of the later day Joe Louis-boxing historians,
and particularly the HBO producers of the documentary
JOE LOUIS AMERICA'S HERO BETRAYED.
and also the author of the recent book Hard Times Man did not even try and do some background research on her,to find out who "Annie Mitchell"
may have been.
(maybe they did, but I didnt see it when I skimmed thru that book,
"Annie Mitchell" was a central but negative influence on Louis's later years.
she is even mentioned in Barney Nagler's 1973 book
THE BROWN BOMBER:the Pilgrimage of Joe Louis,
except in that book she is referred to as"Helen Dayton"
So im sure Louis told Barney Nagler who she was back in 1971.
I think I was able to figure out finally who she was a couple of years ago.
based on the clues that Joe Louis had given in his 1978
autobiography. If I could do it,no doubt the producers of the HBO documentery could and so could have the author of the book.

Yes,Joe Louis was connected to "Annie Mitchell" romantically.
He even says in his autobiography that when they were in bed together,
he said"i think im through"meaning how his post-boxing career was going
and he felt run down all the time.
He said he turned over in bed and she shot into his Behind
something from a syringe and he said it made him feel soo good.
Like the night he won the fight with Carnera.
He also thought she was making X-rated movies in another room
at a hotel while she had doped him unconcious herself on a few occasions.
He said her chauffeur worked for the mob too.
Its a really wild chapter in his 1978 book as opposed to everything else.

You know in Joe Louis's book,he mentions that Annie Mitchell
but didnt mention her race specifically, but my guess she was African-American.
he did say she was kind of "Chinese looking".
and that she wore wigs for disguise when she was delivery money in the bags to wherever.
I also seem to remember the A&E Channel doing a show on the mafia in Las Vegas
and they did a spot on a lady who delivered the skimmed profits in a bag
on a train, plane wherever,I dont know if that was her or just another pick up lady.

any new info turn up on this subject ?
Did that one dude (Randy Roberts )who wrote that Joe Louis biography in 2013 HARD TIMES MAN
ever look into this ?
From what I remember reading in Joe Louis's 1978 autobiography.
Louis went down to Beaumont Texas to referee a wrestling Match ( circa 1955)
and when he got their the woman's husband had JUST been murdered by someone
( some kind of love triangle it seems )
The husband was like a prominent citizen of Beaumont and owner of a funeral parlor.
anyone come across any old newspapers articles that may shed some light on this ?

Louis’ struggles with mental health in his later life are a matter of public record. I want to say this as respectfully as possible: I’m not doubting that Louis believed what he reported.

However, the notion of whether his belief was the reality is another issue altogether. The “I was shot up when I bent over” story tests credibility.

The question isn’t who is the mysterious Ms. Mitchell. The question is do you believe she really existed?
