was on football focus yesterday and according to reports he has commited suicide

As a Leeds United fan that is sad sad news. A true legend & a gentleman.

Thoughts are with his family at this time.

Christ. He must have been in a whole lot of pain to have driven him to that.

To the outside world he seemed a happy successful guy. It just shows that no one really knows what demons torment some people.

RIP Gary.

Extremely shocked and saddened by this news. Gary Speed was a great player and a credit to Sheffield United. The timing seems so strange. What brings a successful 42-year-old, respected and well-liked by seemingly everyone, to take his own life and leave behind his wife and two young sons. Tragic.

Very sad news indeed. RIP.

Rarely been so shocked and reminds all of us again that issues like depression are so much serious than many believe (I'm basing that on some reports that are attributing his actions to suffering severe depression). So sad for him and those around him.

Love to hear from psychologist on these matters... I've followed his career through football mainly through Leeds Utd where he won the Championship, he always seemed a really positive guy. Even on FF yesterday I listened to him and Gary Mcallister and as always he came across really well. He's the same age as myself and I always thought how well he had looked after himself. He played on into his late thirties and still looked fit enough today to play in the lower leagues at least. Things at Wales were coming together too. Cannot understand this, really sad and confusing. No doubt things will begin to seep out in the press in the coming days.
I have had 2 fairly close friends who took their own life and other than a terminal illness I cannot accept a reason to ever do this. My thoughts are with his family. RIP Gary.

I've not known where to put myself all day..... I'm just numb.

I live just five minutes walk from the ground and just wondered almost aimlessly down to the Bremner statue, had ten minutes to myself there before the TV crews showed up and then I left.

It's just such a waste, can't imagine what he was going through to make him do this.

Great career, dream job managing his country, one of the most liked & respected men in football, but above all a wife & kids. What must he have been going through to make him leave all that behind? Can't even imagine.

With this, Robert Enke, Darren Sutherland and Stan Collymore's recent problems, hopefully some good will come of it and more people will start seeing depression (if it was indeed that) for the terrible illness that it is.

Tragic... Only watching him on football focus yesterday&would never have thought this would happen.

Absolutely gutted.

He never played for my team and I am not Welsh but he was a 100% class act, model pro and credit to football. It was impossible not to respect the man, his achievements and attitude.

My sincerest condolences to his family, wife and 2 boys.
