After watching Takaloo last Saturday and hearing the reasons for his performance on ringside last night, I have been wondering how many boxers fight while ill just because they financially can't afford not to.

Any thoughts?

No idea to be honest, but most boxers will tell you they rarely get in the ring 100% - if it's not one thing, it's another. Not too surprising considering the way most will push themselves in training.

Dont know what Tak's excuse was, caught the highlights last night but turned over during the interview - the poor guy look too shattered to be giving an interview so soon after...

I'd have thought he was on a weekly wage, seeing as he's a fighter knocking on the door of world class ( at least he was )

I would say most fighters go into fights with aches and strains, but you only hear about them if they lose. Some of the things they come out with are actually quite funny. Glenn McCrory, after capitulating from a short left hook to the body from Jeff Lampkin to lose his IBF cruiserweight title, came out with quote after quote on how impossible it had been for him to make cruiser: how he couldn't even sweat, feared for his life, hadn't touched fluids for days and the like. This was in March 1990.
In July 1993, he challenged for the same IBF cruiserweight title.

After Tyson v Holyfield wasn't Tyson's excuse......... "I was a bit peckish"

There are too many up and coming boxers not on a weekly wage (even a low wage). Perhaps if they were it might take financial worrys out of the equation...... Although some might say this could take away the hunger ?

Wish I were on a weekly wage for boxing.

I could understand it if it were low level Boxers but the upper level to top guys should never use injury as an excuse, listening Oscar?

Weekly wage ? Your seriously deranged my son ! Try;trained arse off for four hours a day,six days a week(with no wage),travelled back n forth to gym,sparring gym,park,track,Jimmy mac knockin on your door at 4am for a ten miler,in the dark and snowing),not seen missus or kid,half starved,on anti-biotics etc,etc....arrive at show night of the fight,sold 200 tickets(not f****n' easy).Feel a bit rough;Q;do you go home without your hard earned few grand or fight regardless ? brilliantly put and bang on.

None of the fighters I know are on a wage and most find it hard to get fights often enough to pay the bills.... and I am not talking about average fighters here... that includes some of the best in the country

Just I read in Eubank's book the other day that B Hearn put him on a weekly wage when he first signed for him as a prospect.
Obviously the select few I guess..
