Cook v Burns 'betting irregularities' investigation

Whatever happened to the Board's investigation into this?

You will all remember that certain bookies stopped taking bets on a Burns stoppage win in rounds 1 -3, because they saw some worrying betting patters, i believe largely due to huge bets on this outcome being made in East London and Essex.

After the farcial conclusion to the fight, where Cook was clearly seriously injured, the board immediately announced it would be looking into it and nobody could criticise them for doing exactly that.

The Racing Post said at the time

"Burns to win in round three had been available at 25-1 on Friday but punters continued to back it despite layers slashing the odds, setting alarm-bells ringing. A gamble on Burns to win in round three seems especially strange as the Scottish champion is not known for his knockout power – he has stopped only eight of 31 opponents (24 per cent) and four of his last five fights have gone the distance."

So have i missed the announcement into what their enquiry had uncovered?

Ian wrote a good piece at the time and considering the passage of time, it's worth having another look at it now.

I don't think there was an investigation - wasn't seen as worthy of one, if I remember rightly.

You must be joking? Any other sport in the world would both move mountains to get to the bottom of the suspicion AND want to be seen to be doing that.

I can't believe there wasn't an enquiry - there must have been!

Can you imagine the Premier League dealing with a situation like this? They would be on it in a flash because they understand that the intergrity of the game is absolutely paramount. I can't imagine any governing body of any sport taking the view that suspicions such as these could go without investigation and a very public and transparent announcement into those findings.

If there is no investigation then it allows people to use phrases lile 'no smoke without fire' and 'brushing under the carpet' - much better to look into a situation, prove that there was no wrong-doing (which i am sure is the case in this example) and then announce that a clean bill of health has been diagnosed following a proper examination.

There was no need for an investigation, word got out Cook was injured and a few people lumped on.

No, Frank said quite clearly that no-one knew that Cook was injured and quite correctly pointed out that Cook had passed all relevant board medicals.

Well the story was doing the rounds that Cook was injured when the betting was suspended so someone is talking out of their hole.

Lesson in life #1 - Don't believe a word that comes out of (edit by Mod) mouth.

If your last bit is right (and the lumping on bit is certainly correct) then that's exactly why there is a need for an investigation!

But, as usual, no one gives a shit, 'this is boxing' etc. etc.

EXACTLY! IF (big if) word did get out that Cook was injured then essentially we are saying that people not in possession of that knowledge were being allowed to bet on a sporting event that wasn't all that it appeared to be; and Sky were paying out for a duff match.

These are serious issues!

Can the people that run our sport not understand that it is exactly this type of thing that makes TV execs give boxing a wide berth. It's completely unreliable and the board should be EVERYTHING in its power to root anyone who breaks the rules and tarnishes the sport.
