Here's my annual list of British boxers who need to improve their level of competition, and those who should probably hang 'em up.

Personally i think it's a bit harsh having Brian Magee on the list. He's fought elite level competition and lost. He's also fought around the world. I think if he steps up and fights any of the top 168'ers he'd lose. In fact i'd be only 55-45 that he'd beat Degale and Groves. Everyone else on your list needs to step up because they have the talent to do so, i think Brian's found his level.

I agree 100% in terms of Magee having had a solid career in terms who he's fought and won and lost against. A stalwart campaigner for sure. But it's just that he's now calling himself a world champion - in which case I'm saying "prove it".

Nice article oliver... Sprott still looked lively in prizefighter. Not sure he's quite done. Price - Sprott would be brill.

Agree with that.

He stepped up last year and fought Bute "away", was a big underdog when he went "away" to fight Larsen in 2010 and has already agreed to go away again to Markessun in February.

Hardly the record of a lad unwilling to "step up"

Harsh on Nathan Cleverly, old boy. I know he has the title of world champ, but he shouldnt be judged at that level yet.


Robin Reid looked washed up 11 years ago, i can only imagine* what he has looked like recently.

Fair comment, "stepping up" would not be a very profitable* experience for him.

would be a great fight for Groves or DeGale. I'd back either of them to beat Brian, but would love to see it because, well, he's a credit to the sport (save his comments on being a world champion) and would benefit from the payday!

He didn't look so hot against Dimitrenko though.

Sprott's an odd one. Against his domestic rivals he raises his game, but on the continent he seems content to know his role.

I agree with you on David Price and Gavin Rees mate, as Price has the raw ingredients to go along way and Rees needs to fight Crolla/Burns to show he is the best British Lightweight.
