Nathan Cleverly opponent annouced

WBA number 11, American Tommy Karpency, has a good record of 21 wins from 24 fights and 14 KO's & last year took Karo Murat - who Cleverly beat in Sept 2010 - the full twelve rounds. Cleverly says, 'Karpency looks like a tough fighter and he took Murat the distance last year and Murat gave me a hard fight.'

Surely they can do better than this?

Why is the fact he went the distance with Murat of any significance when Murat didn't even go the distance with Cleverly himself? :witzend:

This guy is ranked 83rd in the world by Boxrec, and 19th in America????

Thoughts please?

Shocking fight.

If he can't defend a World title he shouldn't have one

The Murat decision was fair but crazily wide and although Karpency is not bad at what he does, Cleverly should not be fighting a guy who has been beaten by someone that Cleverly has
already beaten. I know that Cleverly is being lined up for Hopkins and they don't want that fight to fall by the wayside, however, this is not a great fight and to be honest its not a good fight. The pace that Cleverly fights at will be too much for this kid and I can see him breaking him down late on

I'd rather see Jeff Lacy or even James Toney in there

Poor opponent alright and it must be a bit embarrassing to be selling this as a "World Title" fight but I have come to expect no less. Apparently an offer was made to Shumenov but he won't be ready in time, but FW said it may happen later in the year.

Karpency has lost to Rayco Saunders (22 wins 14 losses) sigh....

But he's never been stopped....

Get the car on ''webuyanycar'' and shove it on a Cleverly stoppage, probably a very dominant one.

Why not a genuine world level operator like Campillo?

This is a SHOCKING FIGHT.

Looks like Cleverley is following in the footsteps of the Calzaghe WBO bum of the month title run. Tocker Pudwell could be next!

Exactly, and if you look one place above him in the US rankings = a 38 year old Byron Mitchell

Even Mitchell may be a better opponent, to sell the fight at least, with the Calzaghe angle.

A gust of wind knocks Mitchell over these days.

The sooner Ismael Silakh smokes this fraud the better....it's disgusting guys like Cleverley and many many others in boxing can go around calling themselves world champions when true boxing fans know they own garbage world title belts.

And he's still ranked above this guy. Which says it all really doesn't it? Disappointing.

I don't know why on earth people would complain about this matchup.

it clearly shows FW promotions have gone way beyond the Bobby Gunn level of opponent. kudos.

Karpency does hold a win over the brilliantly named 'Mike McFail' though! :)

To be fair to Tocker Pudwill, he was a last-minute sub and had gone distance with Sven Ottke.

This guys looks hopeless (although Cleverly is no Joe Calzaghe either).
