Didn't he beat Gary Mason in the SW divs? I'm sure it was James Oyebola who got knocked out by Lennox Lewis, representing Canada, in the Commonwealth Games but can't remember if Lewis also beat Wells.

Just by looking at his record, i can see why he isnt well remembered.

At the 84 Olympics he had 2 flights, won 1, lost t'other, which was enough for a bronze.

Turned pro 2 years later and Won his 1st fight by a single point, was KO'd in his 2nd by a bloke with a 4-7 record. Won his next fight on points, was inactive for 3 years before turning up in the Soviet Union to win 1 fight by DQ before getting knocked out by a Finn.


Good on him for turning his life around, anyway.

Wells lost to Damiani in the semi's of the Olympics. And yes he did beat Gary Mason in the SW Divs.

I've got the Lennox Lewis v Bobby Wells fight on video think it took place in 1986, just watched it and i couldn't work out what wasn't quite right, then i realised that Bobby didn't wear a headguard and Lennox did. Bobby puts in a good effort , but Lewis is a bit to good for him and stops him with a few seconds remaining in the 3rd round.

Think there was a You Tube vid of him fighting Joe Egan, I seen that on there a good few years ago now

Without wishing to disrespect Wells (he has more Olympic medals than me), I'm guessing that a combination of a) it being the first time the super heavies had a separate division and b) far more importantly, the boycott by the Eastern European countries and Cuba, meant it was hardly the most competitive of events.

Biggs and damiani were decent fighters, but they certainly weren't up against much competition.

Got a bye in the first round, flattened a Tongan with a big right hand in the quarters and was stopped in the semis by Damiani

That pretty much sums it up. His namesake winning gold four years earlier in the 100m was a comparable example of a 'soft medal' when the Americans were absent from Moscow.

Agree, Alan Wells is unfairly labelled a lucky winner of the gold medal in 1980 because of the boycott, but he beat all comers in 1981, including Ben Johnson, Carl Lewis, Mel Lattany, Stanley Floyd.

I worked with Bobby a few times with the London Squad, nice lad.He was only really a novice. It amused me, working with a Kid whose Father was part of my Boxing education. Billy beat me in the London Finals, beat Joe Bugner in the Semis.

ko'd a fat Tongan to win a bronze medal. thats some easy medal haul, boy

i seem to remember two others at that time ELi Frankham and danny moul ??? maybe the names are a bit wrong. but they didnt do anything in the pros at that time.

Moul stopped Mason in the amateur's I think but then didn't do too much in the pro's. I'm pretty certain that he was Frank Maloney's first heavyweight signing and a big lump.

Bobby Wells was at Kingston Boys, where I was trained by Freddie for a while whilst I was studying at Kingston College in the 80s. It used to cost me a nicker each training session. Happy days for me.

It's a bit harsh to imply (by one or two) that gaining his Olympic Bronze wasn't the hardest thing to do. He had to become the best of British to qualify for the UK team. No easy feat.

Bobby was stopped by Lennox Lewis in the third round at Milton Keynes just a few months after winning bronze in the Los Angeles Olympics, but he gave Lennox a pretty good fight. Lennox had been eliminated by Tyrell Biggs in LA in the quarter-finals.

One of my earliest boxing memories is of Bobby Wells flattening the Tongan to win broze.

It was a piledriver.

Harry Carpenter lost his cool and with a break in his voice shouted "and Bobby Wells has done it for Britain"
