the gym I go to is mainly kickboxing, and the fella who runs it is putting on a show in March, im thinking of going to it.
Anyone else follow that scene or similar things?

yeah a mate of mine used to kick box for team GB and my mrs's family longtime family friend i think was/is the middle weight champion or it could be midlands champion i cant recall

I used to watch a fair bit live in Cov but the show here in Rugby keep getting cancelled and the tickets are dear.

gone to a few muay thai events. they are very tough, agressive fighters. sparred a few not too long ago, def a young mans game. felt under pressure in every range and thus gassed after 1st round, was like i'd been run over by a bus the next morning.

yep used to do thai boxing its the best striking combat form bar non but its deffo a young mans game. Having said that one of the best fighters in the world is some french guy whos always drunk and doesnt even look in shape, he's mates with GSP they brought him in as a guest trainer along with freddie roach on the ultimate fighter and the guy was insane. Lives like a proper thai warrior.

Anyone ever watched Ong Bak?

Not so much these days, used to love watching the likes of Dekkers, Kiatadisak and Kiatsongrit amongst others.

I train guys who compete all over the country in thaiboxing,K-1 and kickboxing, The quality of the shows can vary from fantastic to utterly sh#t. Some of the stuff that goes on is shocking which is really damging the sport and is a real shame for the genuine promoters who are striving to push things forward.

i can totally believe that.

Kickboxing is in a pretty bad way competitively to be honest, there is a lot of associations about in britain, and from a professional standpoint, any standouts turn to boxing as there is no money in kickboxing.
There is no clear distinction between amateur and professional, many associations have limited rules for headguards, use there own judges and refs. Its also extremely easy to get a belt as as long as you pay a sanction fee most associations will gladly put a title fight on your show, its common to have six or seven area/english/british/celtic/intercontinental/commonwealth champions in each weight category and then they can be split again into amateur, pro-am and pro, and split between associations (wka wako ikf golden belt wkn iska wrsa the list goes on)
im not knocking your or anyones club, and im not saying dont go to the show because youll have a good laugh but dont expect the quality to be fantastic!
Three ex kickboxers i can think of who have turned to boxing that are active ricky gammon, ronnie clark and steve jevons

I agree but there are some real quality
World class fighters to be seen in this
Country and the big shows are very well done with some
Quality matchmaking.

I teach Muay Thai and work in one of the biggest promotions companies in the Country, we have a show at Event City on 31st March in Manchester. There is tremendous talent out there, the Uk has some of the best fighters in the World outside of Thailand, but politics and egos do get in the way!

Oliver Harrison was a world class Thai Boxer, as was his brother Humphrey and Johnny Roye. Scott Quigg trained with me from age ten and won six titles before he moved to Boxing. Carl Thomson was a Thai boxer before he moved to Boxing.

I've spent most of my life training in Kickboxing and I'm an ardent supporter of it being made an Olympic sport.

I've boxed as well, but I prefer kickboxing - it's more of an all-bodyh workout that a typical boxing regime...

As for the UK boxing scene, it's hard to follow it because it's not mainstream.
Although I do follow the World Kickboxing Network news.

Very interesting... didn't know that. I remember seeing Sandy Holt give an exhibition at an event I went to back in 1990 (Clash of the Titans) and was seriously impressed. Never had the opportunity to train Thai though as there was no club near me when I was growing up.
Are those of you involved in Thai and kickboxing feeling any pressure through fighters transitioning to MMA as well as boxing these days? The reason I ask is that quite a few of the UK's top MMA fighters seem to have a Thai boxing background.

Yeah, Semmy Shilt bores the pants off me too.

I see Badr Hari says he is moving into boxing after his next fight.

I'm quite partial to Tyrone Spong, but he's going to MMA now anyway, and isn't the fighter he once was.

If I had to have sex with one alcoholic, it would be Ignashov.
