Quarry Could Beat A Lot Of Champs...

You always hear this, so I thought Id see who we all would favour Quarry to beat for THE title (no Ruiz's or Bruno's, please). Heres the lineage* if you need help. Ive reserved judgement on the REALLY old-timers. Names in upper-case are those Id favour Quarry to best, and Ive also made note of fights I think would be even-money or thereabouts.
Klitschko
Lewis
RAHMAN
BRIGGS
Moorer (50-50)
Holyfield
Bowe
DOUGLAS
Tyson
SPINKS
Holmes
Ali
SPINKS
Foreman
Frazier
ELLIS
Liston
Patterson
JOHANSSON
Marciano
Walcott
Charles
Louis
BRADDOCK
Baer (50-50)
CARNERA
Sharkey (50-50)
Schmeling (50-50)
Tunney
Dempsey
WILLARD
Johnson
Jeffries
Fitzsimmons, Corbett, Sullivan (Not considered)
I give him odds against ten ex-champs, with several more being touch-&-go affairs. Not bad.
*There may be some slight variation in the recognised lineage from member-to-member.

Nice list, I pretty much agree with all of your picks!

I agree with all of them except Ellis which of course he actually lost to in his prime. I know there's the 'broken' back thing but Ellis is really a type of fighter that Quarry always had problems with stylistically.

Jerry Quarry would've been champ in so many eras.
Imagine what Quarry would have done to a Sam Peter, David Haye or John Ruiz?

Can you imagine a more perfect opponent for Quarry than the slow plodding Peter?

I tallied roughly eight separate eras he'd have made champ in. Impressive.

All held belts, but none were champions.

Well Jerry would knock over some of the Heavyweight Champions we've had in the past 10 years...
Lyakhovich and Maskaev to name but two...

I disagree. with many, in that i see Quarry as extremely overated by most, and comfortably short of the top class of fighter and thus, i dont really think he would ever be favoured to become a world champion. He did have some decent though inconsistent performances. ON the list above, i would say that as well as the fighters listed, he also loses to Willard, Carnera, Johanssen, Ellis, Spinks (michael), Douglas, Schmelling, Baer and Sharkey (assuming all are at their best). I have him 50/50 with Braddock, Paterson (their fights prove this, imo), Rahman, Leon Spinks and Moorer(although if forced to pick, Moorer would be the only one i would pick over him. I favour him over Briggs.

I heartily disagree with boilermopper, and I imagine Quarry stands a fair chance of upsetting the likes of Walcott Foreman, Liston, Tyson and Holyfield.
I'd venture to say he beats a random half of the names I just listed depending on where lady luck sits during those fights.
There's no doubt Max Baer would lose to him, because no matter where Lady Luck sat, Max would be staring at her chest.
I don't think Jerry was over rated, AND he had little in the way of good luck along his path.

Take another look at that list --- plenty of those guys were, "comfortably short," of the top-class of fighter.
