This time, I go against Chavez. Its a terrible style disadvantage hes at, and when two guys are this evenly-matched, that proves the difference, IMO.
I tell you what though, Chavez would be licking his lips at that wasp-waist of Arguello's, being the sublime bodypuncher he was.

I have to agree. Arguello TKO 11, Chavez swollen & protesting.

Arguello does a "Surgeon" on Chavez. Cuts him up and stops Julio late.

Another tough call, but I think I might once again have to go with Arguello. The overlooked factor being his own body work.

I think Chavez had fits with tall fighters, especially ones who can hit hard. Still,i somehow see Julio managing to pull it off with a late round body attack barrage, only providing its a 15 rd'er though. If a 12 rd'er then Arguello takes it with a 116-113 type decision.

I think this would go to the scorecards and be very close. Will have to think about this one, but my first instinct was Chavez by close decision based on a strong finish.

For me personally Arguello looks to keep Chavez at long range with his jab and digging to the body to try and keep the swarming Chavez off knowing full well that Chavez is going to be going after his long thin body with that devasting body attack of his, but I think it would be an utter war of a fight with plenty of blood and knockdowns but Chavez nicks on points through sheer guts and refusal not give in.

This one would truly be a fight for the ages. I think Arguello would be able to build up enough of an early lead over the first 7 or 8 rounds to roll onto a decision victory, but Chavez would be all over him by the end of the fight and Arguello would be damn happy to hear that final bell. Arguello by a tough, tough split decision victory in a hellacious fight.

I see Arguello winning 8-9 rounds and taking the decision.

Agreed that Arguello is the favorite here, he was a bigger puncher in a fight when they both would eat a lot of leather. I'm perplexed why so many see Julio coming on late, granted he had great stamina. But he never saw a 13th round. I suspect he would love the extra nine minutes as well, but I watched Arguello stop several top fighters after round twelve. Don't see the advantage for a guy in uncharted territory over one that has proven it time and again.
Arguello by decision in 12, stoppage in 14.

First off, Chavez is NOT getting stopped by anyone at this weight, at that stage of his career. Arguello straightens Chavez up a few times, gives him all he can handle then wilts late under Chavez constant body attack. Chavez late tko or decision.

What weight and stage would that be? You're the first to mention it. The chances of Arguello being stopped are extremely slim.

You're right Saad, excuse me. In my mind i figured the best and fairest weight and stage for the parties would be Jr. Lightweight or lightweight in their respective prime, of course. I also concede about my tko call as well; you're right very slim chance. After I pressed submit I thought better of it but had to step out. I'll stand by my Chavez UD descision, with Arguello wilting but still surving till the end.

The chances of Chavez being stopped are slimmer still.
JCC pulls out a close decision after he comes up big in the late rds.

I was thinking Lightweight as well, I think Alexis would be a big favorite at 130. The rounds matter too, I give Julio a better shot at 12.

How do you figure? Arguello sliced many a face to ribbons, that's the best bet of a stoppage between these two.

I do find it peculiar that people believe Chavez will be the one coming on late.

Agreed. I have as much respect for Chavez's grit and whiskers as anyone, but coming at a guy like Arguello...that accuracy, that range, that power...NO 130-135lber who EVER lived would be totally impervious.

Prime Chavez was as unstopable as anyone's ever been in the sport of boxing, he wins by close UD.

I see where you're coming from, but just because Chavez generally struggled with fast slick movers, it doesn't mean a non-mover can't beat him. Or if you wish to stay with your logic, arguello was really only troubled by movers and Chavez isn't a mover, so...
Arguello was indeed upright and not quick, but he hit harder and was a better offensive fighter than anyone Chavez beat, and Chavez's come-forward style puts him right in firing range for most of the fight.
I personally sway either way, I don't see much unequivocal in this matchup, other than a great fight.
