I went with too close to call. Cooney would shatter to a thousand pieces if he floored a guy six or seven times, and the man kept coming at him, but he probably beats Firpo to the punch and boy, could he whack. Of course, so could Firpo, and he holds a BIG advantage in durability...I dunno.

Cooney has more skills but give me the guy with the better chin in this one. Firpo TKO 2. IMO Cooney had one of the worse chins of the 80s . .

Only after he was shot. I say prime Cooney takes it in the 5th.

His fight with Holmes proved he never had a reliable chin, prime or otherwise. He made Holmes look like Tyson at times :DD

Firpo would definitely have his chances. He wounded Dempsey (briefly, but legitimately), who was ten times as durable as Cooney.

Dempsey was ten times as durable as Cooney based on what exactly? Cooney was ko'd by Holmes, Spinks and Foreman. None of these guys were exactly light hitters. i wouldnt be suprised if all three, including Spinks, hit harder than anyone Dempsey ever fought.

Carpantier, Brennan and Sharkey staggered Dempsey badly, none of those guys hit anywhere near as hard as the three that stopped Cooney. Now before anyone pitches a fit, I'm not saying Cooney beats Dempsey; but to say Dempsey is vastly more durable than Cooney is basing it solely on the mythology that has grown around the Manassa Mauler. The fact that some on this site think Dempsey could have stood toe to toe with Tyson is mindbogglingly.

Granberry told me that Dempsey's fists were the size of wrecking balls, and his fundamentals without equal, thus rendering your contribution null and void.

Spinks (at Heavy) and Holmes could punch? They could punch harder than Willard, or Firpo? Pure fantasy.

Holmes turned a totally fresh Cooney into bambi on ice with ONE PUNCH in round two. If that isnt the mark of a glass jaw, I dont know what is. Holmes doesnt even appear to commit completely to the punch, yet Cooney reacts as if struck by lightning.

And dont forget Otto put him down with one shot in The Simpsons :DD

Sometimes you just have to realize when people are being respectful, but deep down probably think otherwise.

Frazier said Marciano would beat him. Similar deal.

Willard and Firpo power advantage came from their relatively large size in their era. Holmes and heavyweight Spinks both would have been huge, powerful men in Willard and Firpo's time and would have had even more impressive ko's than those two 'giants". You really think those two would have been considered as powerful in Holmes and Spinks era? i don't think so.

Yance,

I dont believe thats the case in this one. Tyson WORSHIPPED Dempsey. I think Tyson would sincerely have his doubts.

Spinks isnt a big Heavy in 1985, 1885, or anywhere in between --- and neither he nor Holmes punched with anywhere near Willard or Firpo's force.

Okay, maybe so.

But I know where my few pesos would have been had they met at their absolute peaks.

p.s. I will admit I was awed by Tyson at his peak---here was a bigger, faster Frazier with greater power, etc.

He didn't turn out to be what I thought.
