Cooney seems to get very underrated on this forum, and weren't as bad as some say.
I see Haye getting KOd in this unless he does a run around like he did with WK.
I wouldn't wanna watch it as Haye was probably The most boring fighter ever when he was scared, and he would be very scared of a Cooney who was at his best in 1982.
He may well of had the hardest left hook in history.

I'd sell my grandma to see Cooney hit Haye with his best left hook to the body.

I see Cooney almost beating to death Hayes.... he would stalk Haye down....Haye would be dancing and coming in with fast flurries which Gerry would walk down with gritted teeth.....as soon as he gets Haye on the ropes in round 4 he digs a humungous left hook to the ribs and haye goes down....haye gets up and another left hook to the body and a pulverising left hook to the head and haye slumps on the rope out on his feet, another left hook and haye falls out of the ring.

I just don't see this.

I say Haye hits the deck before the punch lands.............................................. ad infinitum.

I basically agree with these replies. I definately see the 82 version of Cooney as a devastating force to be reckoned with. Haye is NO Larry Holmes. He just would'nt have the style or technique or gameplan. Horrible style matchup for Haye. I see Cooney winning by devastating body attack barrage while Haye gets cornered in round 3 once he gets tired of excessive running from the first 2 rounds.

Haye would try his Valuev/Klitschko run around and throw 5 punches a round strategy. It may work for a couple of rounds. But Cooney was not as tentative as Wladimir nor nearly as slow as Valuev. Cooney catches Haye with a big shot to the body in the 3rd, finishes him off in the 4th.

I wonder how many times his eyes would roll when that left hook landed?

this is a pretty interesting fight though.
I agree with the consensus here that cooney wins, but both really are very unproven at heavyweight. I am not convinced that Cooney was top tier. I do think the Cooney offence and left hook and power will be the difference and will have Haye running for most of the time. I say Cooney wins on points.

It's close. Both men get talked down. I think Haye wins.

Cooney wouldbe the favourite I reckon. But Haye could win the fight by winning more rounds.

I think most fighters win fights if they win more rounds. . .

Prime Cooney beats Haye any which way 99 times out of 100. Haye was hurt by Barrett and Mormeck, non punchers compared to Cooney.

Haye is no Michael Spinks and 82 Cooney was a world away from the uninterested going through the motions 87 version....Spinks stood like a man absorbed a lot of shots on his arms and elbows which Haye wouldnt be able to do and counterpunched ferociously...Haye is not anywhere near the league of Spinks at HW, didnt have his brain, skills or speed....sadly the Tyson massacre obscurs any conversation about Spinks at HW.....

Dont forget the fact that Spinks was also extremely ordinary at HW (and his people knew it). The Cooney Holmes battled would have splattered Spinks, who was handled at HW like he was a piece of fine china. He was kept away from every viable contender in the division until his quitjob with Tyson could be organised.

Expert post.

Very even matchup. My first thought was to, in a matchup of two punchers with shaky chins, go with the more slippery defensive fighter in Haye, but then I remembered that Haye vs the big heavyweights just tries to just potshot and evade his way to a decision win. I don't think that strategy works vs Cooney, who would throw more punches than Wlad or Valuev did and make Haye work more. And Haye, while having an adequate defense, is not as slippery as he thinks and he often gets hit. There is always the chance that in an exchange Haye lands a big one, but more likely Cooney lands a big hook to the body and head sometime in the middle rounds as Haye starts to tire.

I'd pick Cooney by KO within 5 or 6 rounds.

No Way Haye loses this, unless his toenail has a very bad infection, or he's suffering from the heartbreak of psoriasis.

I don't see why you say that with such conviction. I think Haye is more unproven at heavy than Cooney was.

Yeah I can be a hard one to read sometimes. Let me say it this way, I believe that Haye would have a very deep toenail infection on the day he stepped up against Cooney.
