Just a question I been trying to find the answer too, maybe someone knows the answer on here?

Have national titles always been able to be contested abroad, for example:

McDonagh vs Murtagh for the Irish title on 25th Feb this year; is being contested in Sussex?

This just seems wrong to me, I think national titles should be contested on their home soil in front of a home crowd. Has this always been the way or is it a more recent occurrence, has the English or Scottish titles ever been contested 'abroad'?

tony oakey defended his british title in ireland

Didn't Hennessy win the bids for Chisora Fury the first time of asking, having planned to put the fight on abroad (Spain I think) - only to be turned down? I think c5 came along for him just after that.

There was an Irish title on the Price undercard last week.

Am sure been a few Irish title fights in liverpool.

Did steve collins beat Storey in the USA for the Irish title?

Without sounding a bit racist - the irish title gets defending in mainland UK quite a bit, and even elsewhere.

And yeah Hennessy wanted to hold Fury/Chisora in marbella I think?

Made an interesting concept imo at the time, loads of english holidaying over there

He did, theres been loads abroad, plenty in Brum - Darren Sweeney and Michael Alexander fought for the title in the 90's - Liverpool, Hull, London and a few others have also played host.

Malcolm Melvin beat Shuan Coogan for the Irish light welter title in Brum back in the early 90s too. There are loads of examples.

Been a few Welsh ones in England
Pat Clinton v Joe Kelly fought in England for a Scottish title (1987) and Steve Watt v Tommy McCallum (1985) (I'm not going any further back on that one)

Tony Oakey v Brian Magee fought in a British title fight in Dublin (2007)

I think the Oakey v Magee fight was the only British title fight to take place outside of the UK

Not a national title, I know, but it always struck me as "why not indeed!" when Junior Witter defended the Commonwealth title against Lovemore Ndou in the United States :-)

I don't see any problem with national title contested aboard, but I think it's nice they get contested on home soil.

If memory serves me correctly, that fight also served as a WBC eliminator which is probably which is why over the United States.

I refereed that. I thought it strange at the time, but it was essentially put on to introduce the British public to Lacy prior to his fight with Calzaghe.

Irish titles often contested in Britain, largely because there wasn't a big active Irish professional scene until the 90s, so Irish boxers were often based in UK.
