Jem Mace is one of the most interesting characters in teh history of boxing. Even though he was a bareknuckle fighter, i think he deserves his own appreciation thread on this board, where we can all post interesting articles, comments and facts about him.

I will start with this article which appears to be an unrecorded fight from 1886 where he defeated Albert Thompson.

Jem Mace was booked to spar with Jim Corbett. It would have been great to see how that session went down.

there is a short article about three things not generally known about Jem Mace.

And here is an account of the Jim Corbett, Jem Mace, exhibition, by Corbett himself. Very, very interesting. I thought it also interesting to see his impressions on mike donovan who corbett seemed very impressed with. It is interesting that Mace's speed surprised corbett, and while he didnt like his footwork, one has to wonder whether this might change if Mace had not been so old.

Not likely the same Mace. (1) The article names this fighter as H. Mace. (2) Just two weeks before, Mace refereed the Jem Smith-Alf Greenfield bout at Maison-Lafitte, France. Hard to see how Mace could have made it back to Australia in time for fight.

There's a blue plaque to him in Norwich town centre...



I've no idea who the handsome bastard in the picture is.

I will have to look into this when i get the chance, but it is certainly possible you are right. Did i really miss that it referred to H instead of Jem. It must have been getting late when i first posted the article

and there is a good account of an 80 year old Jem Mace sparring with Donovan, as told by Jo Choynski, himself a great fighter.

He marred his reputation considerably by the Madden fights incidents, the "loss" to Brettle and the identical "draws" with Goss and Coburn.

Love Mace, a true ambassador of the sport, and I wish today there was at least one champion who would do half of what Mace did for the sport. My favorite encounter he ever had was in Dublin where he fought the gypsy king Bartley Gorman the First, and the police broke it up. Forgotten by history, but chronicled in Mace's own autobiography and subsequent biographies, its a shame it isnt even given a mention on CBZ.
