Just noticed this interesting detail, the Aussie Heavyweight Title was won by Colin Wilson in NZ by Stopping John Hopoate. Apparently from what I can gather Hopoate was the Aussie champ however it was a non title fight but because Col stopped Hoppa the current Aussie Champ at the time he claimed the Australian Title...............some rule? Now what if for example a an Aussie Heavy fought Lucas Browne the newly crowned Aussie champ over 4 rounds tipped him over by KO/TKO he'd then by crowned Aussie champ?

This doesnt sit particulary well with me, yes its none of my business I suppose as Im a kiwi, but surely you must win the Aussie title by fighitng over the 10x3min roounds in a contest organised as a Australian title fight. It's obviously not uncommon for guys to take non title fights once they are champion, but clearly they do so at there own risk as there is a chance they will loose there title if they are stopped. If they loose by points they dont loose the title? Is a loss not simply that.....a Loss? Why does it matter wether its by stoppage or points.

Thoughts

This is the main reason that the TV and club fights in Australia in the 1960s and 1970s used two minute rounds, so a champion would not be likely to lose his title for little reward. The rule is that if the fight is with three minute rounds, both fighters make the weight limit and the champion is knocked out he loses his title.

Being a champion means that you can beat anybody in your weight division in the area covered by the title. I think that it is a fair rule.

As for the difference between a points win and a KO, the KO takes away the possibility of human error in scoring.

If Hoppa was outpointed over 10x3 rounds, the title woul've been declared vacant.
As for stoppage, does it really matter if fight was scheduled over, 8, 10, 20. As the above poster said, they should've settled for 8x2 or 10x2
