Do you agree with these famous opinions/self assesments?

Post by BoxBuzz »

1. Foreman expressing he could never beat Lennox Lewis
2. Louis expressing that he could never beat Marciano
3. Holmes saying Marciano couldn't compete with him. (You know..the "jock" quote.) To me Holmes is saying it would not even be competitive.

Disagree with one and two.

I go back and forth on three.

Disagree with one and two, pretty much agree with three.

I think I voted wrong. :verysad:

1. Disagree - I think George tends to underrate his ability in his first career. I agree that in the 90s, Lewis would widely outpoint and quite possibly knock Big George out. Prime for prime, I make Foreman a narrow favourite, largely because he would give Lewis fits with his jab and could take him out at any time with one big punch.

2. Disagree - Prime for prime, I just can't see Louis losing this one. Visiting the canvas, perhaps, but I can't see Marciano beating him down over the distance. Louis by mid-late rounds KO.

3. Somewhat agree - Holmes has nearly every conceivable advantage in this matchup, power aside. Again, I could see Holmes visiting the canvas via Suzie Q, but at least 8 times out of 10, he gets off the canvas to widely outpoint Rocky, or possibly stop him late on cuts.

I vacillate on Lewis-Foreman, but George certainly could win.
I would favor Louis to beat Marciano the clear majority of the time.
I would favor Larry, but it would not be easy by any means. Lesser fighters than Rocky landed big right hands on Holmes and hurt him bad. Larry was just pissed off at the moment, I'm sure he would say otherwise in a calmer state of mind.

Same here. Didn't vote because the above was not an option.

As for statement 1 & 3, I think about half of what Foreman has said throughout the years could be considered bs and while the jockstrap comment probably is true one would have to be a classless asshole to blurt it out like Holmes did.

Same here, only agree with 3. I strongly disagree with one. Prime George would be Lennox worst nightmare.

Doubt it.

Holmes is the most absurdly self-deluded boxer in history.

Well, I suppose it is something that only Holmes himself could speak to. Either way, the sentiment isn't fair. I rank Holmes higher and consider him a better fighter, but Marciano is certainly on a similar level of greatness.

The term "never" means I can't agree with any of them.

I disagree with one and three
I sort of agree with two. (I give Marciano much more chance of beating Louis than what others seem to)

1) Lewis made too many mistakes, like dropping his jab. Foreman woulda clocked him. And Foreman had the far better chin.

2) Prime Louis could have handled Marciano in a tough fight. Louis would have stepped around him all night.

3) Stylewise, Holmes would have had major issues with a bobbing and weaving Marciano. Rocky could easily get under the power jab and slam home a few rights over Larry's lazy left. And on the inside, Holmes' uppercut woulda raised havoc but left himself open for counters. It would be a total war!
