1 - How much time do boxers have to put on weight between the weigh in and the match???

My experience:

Time of weighing to time of fighting is a controversial topic.....first of all non-title fights had to be weighed by their area council on the day of the fight i.e. weigh at noon, fight in evening. Title fights weighed the day before.

Then the Board changed the ruling so that everyone should weigh the day before. But they found discrepancies in boxers weights due to this i.e fighters were weighing a lot heavier come fight time to what they should have been.

Because of this, they have changed the weighing back to the former (non-title fights weigh on the day of the fight, title fights the day before). For example, for my last fight, I weighed at about 2:30pm and fought at 6pm

I would prefer, and I am sure most boxers would agree with me, that weighing in is conducted the day before for all fights. Sad fact but true - many boxers deprive their bodies in order to make the weight, and do not have enough time to recuperate between weighing in and fight time. Hence, dehydration.


To answer your second question:

All boxers have their eyes tested by a qualified optician each year. Failing the test would mean no boxing licence.

I seem to remember Julian Jackson was blind as a bat wasn't he? Used to wear glasses when not boxing and the lenses looked like coke bottles.

Was it Sugar Ray Seales who was blind in one eye and used to pass the eye tests in the USA by memorising the chart?

There were recent rumours I think, from an old trainer, that Smokin' Joe Frazier was blind in one eye for his whole career.

i was watching a few Danny Green fights the other day, in one of them the Ref was wearing Dennis Taylor style Glasses

That HAS to be bullshit. You can't judge distance effectively with only one eye (close one and try it...) ...which would leave a boxer pretty shit out of luck.

2- I'm sure lazer surgery could be conducted if need be. Contact lenses would be a hazard obviously.

I think I first read about in the brilliant book Ghosts Of Manila ( though it could've been somewhere else ) but then it was brought up again last year in the USA, on an ESPN Frazier special.
I heard this quote from someone who watched the show:
"He never told anybody because they'd take his license away. When he had an eye exam he used to put one hand over his bad eye and read the card, then when asked to read with his other eye he would drop his hand and put the other hand over the same eye, giving the impression that he read with the other eye."

BTW Loftgroove, Harry Greb fought around 300 fights blind in one eye, so it aint impossible mate.

Yes exactly, and John Henry Lewis was going progressively more and more blind throughout his long and very successful career.

If it were true, then Frazier's style would have been the perfect antidote to not being able to judge distance. Head buried in the opponent's chest, and not blocking shots with a cross armed bobbing and weaving style, would largely negate the need for acuity of vision, as your opponent is always in front of you....

Weigh in times must cause a few problems and severe risks especially if you are fighting in a very hot country (The dehydration issue as mentioned by Dynomite Dean)

I asked the eyesight question because a reasonable size of the population wear glasses and therefore thought that some boxers may need them too!

I guess corrective surgery must be used now and again!

Fair enough, I stand corrected. :)

We're actually pretty remarkable bits of kit, when you think about it, and our bodies can aompensate for all kinds of shit. That said, neither of my mates had anything like the peripheral vision on their blind side as a fully-sighted person, and I certainly wouldn't like to be taking hooks from the likes of Foreman that I couldn't see coming.

Well, I wouldn't like to be taking any punches ever from the likes of Foreman, but you know what I mean.

I'd lose a lot of respect for the guy if he did climb back through the ropes again. It's like he's saying "Hi everyone, boxing is so crap these days that a 60yr old former champ can compete with the top guys."

I dread to think what he'd look like. In 1997 the only punch Foreman had left was a jab (a bloody heavy jab, admittedly) but I doubt he's even got that now.

Don't do it George, spare a thought for the fans even if you can't for the sport itself.

Marvis Frazier has also lost the vision in one eye. Tony Tucker, too. Larry Holmes wore a contact lens in one eye for his fight with Holyfield. One of the worst cases was a fighter called Lance Williams, a Manchester fighter who was forced to retire with eye problems in the early 80's (he beat an aging Ken Buchanan, and was a good prospect). He later came back under a different name (Tony Dore) in the late 80's and got away with it for a while till Paddy Byrne sussed him at a show. Lance then sold the story to the Sunday newspapers.
