Fightnews are reporting that Maselino Masoe and Evans Ashira (who?) will contest for the Vacant WBA title soon. Amazingly, nobody bidded for this fight.

Now, I'm fully aware that Eastman is planning to go through via his WBC ranking position, but I do think this is a golden opportunity missed.

Who? I doubt very much he'll get Hopkins. Having said this, Hopkins is pretty good a fulfilling his mandatories so you never know. I have my doubts, I'm sure Eastman will be more than happy if Hopkins vacates and he takes on the #2 contendor for the WBC crown. He'll be calling himself a world champion.... I would find it hard to call him that though, unless he fights a Taylor, Allen, Joppy or Hopkins.

The fact you have never heard of either of them probably explains why there were no purse bids.....

True. But this would surely be a golden opportunity for a British promoter to have options on a "geniune" world champion. The minute they get that belt around their waist they'll be heard of.

Ashira is quite a talented fighter, never seen Masoe though although Sam Soliman was going to fight him last year. He seems to be a big puncher but two stoppage losses indicate he may be vunerable.

Not surprisingly they are both Don King fighers hence the WBA shot.

Shame cause Ray Joval, Sam Soliman and Howard Eastman deserve the shot far more!!!

The sad fact is, a genuine world title fight doesn't mean guaranteed big money, look how little Hopkins got for fighting Morade Hakkar, and even William Joppy, and the guy is the undisputed champ!

Ricky Hatton has probably made as much money as Hop has in his career.

At the end of the day, unless a fighter has some kind of big following, they won't generate any money for a promoter, title belt or nothing. As far as I am aware, neither of these guys has any major following, I am pretty sure of this because I never hear their names mentioned anywhere.

Evans Ashira is a decent Kenyan who has spent most of his career in Denmark before signing to Don King and moving to Florida albeit temporarily. He beat a reasonable Nigerian in Jerry Elliott not so long back but has no other names of note on his record despite being unbeaten. Hopkins meanwhile apparently refused $2.5 million to fight Calzaghe, he strikes me as a guy who will fulfill mandatories for little money and in the mean time pursue that real massive payday which at 39 he may never get. I think at this rate his career will peter out and i reckon his stupid demands may mean he misses that windfall for good.

Are those real dollars or phony-baloney allegedly dollars? There's a big difference, you know. Anyone can SAY they offered this-or-that guy such-and-such money to fight their guy. When it comes from someone like Warren, such a statement is usually not worth the hot air it's wafted on.

A few weeks ago, Warren was stating he offered one million dollars to Hopkins. So it's a hell of a jump.
