don curry vs sugar ray leonard
don curry vs sugar ray leonard
if sugar ray had`nt retired in 83 and with curry coming up to his magical prime we most probably would have had a superfight, but who would have won, very close call imo, maybe leonard had the edge with power, though curry easily got on top and dominated against king of the awkward squad starling, who was arguably harder to hit than leonard??

Re: don curry vs sugar ray leonard
SRL would win and by KO
Re: don curry vs sugar ray leonard
as good as starling was when interested he could be viciously lazy and inconsistent. He was no where near SRL's level.tommo100 wrote:if sugar ray had`nt retired in 83 and with curry coming up to his magical prime we most probably would have had a superfight, but who would have won, very close call imo, maybe leonard had the edge with power, though curry easily got on top and dominated against king of the awkward squad starling, who was arguably harder to hit than leonard??
Assuming srl had continued fighting and stayed close to his previous level and they met in late 85 yes it would be a superfight. The super fast reflexes and power of that Curry the solid defence and all round brilliance were like a superior solid chinned version of Terry norris that beat SRL in 1991. But an active 85 SRL would have no semblance to 91 Ray.
I think Ray wins it by very late stoppage in a close fifteen round classic
Re: don curry vs sugar ray leonard
Donald was floored by Jun-Sok Hwang, so this version of Curry would get his clock cleaned by Ray by the sixth round.Curry would only give Leonard two competitive rounds tops, Ray just on another level.

Donald Curry was a terrific and excellent fighter. He had everything the great Sugar Ray Leonard had, except the chin. Leonard by TKO in 10 in an excellent contest of great skill and ring smarts.

Re: don curry vs sugar ray leonard
This is a great hypothetical.
It certainly would have been a superfight, but I think Ray takes it on points, or even a very hardfought late stoppage via Left hook. &
It's just a shame that SRL suffered eye problems, because we were robbed of potential classic bouts.
If he hadn't of retired, aside from a Curry superfight, we probably would have had a rematch with Hearns a lot earlier; a Hagler fight in about 1983 & possible fights with McCallum & Pryor.
Shame really. :(

Re: don curry vs sugar ray leonard
I know he does, I mean Leonard would not have fought Hagler in 1983, had he an uninterrupted career.
And no one should penalise Leonard for that.

Re: don curry vs sugar ray leonard
retired or not leonard wanted nothing to do with hagler,he only showed an interest when marvelous was slowing down after too many ring wars, even then he had to trade off a quarter of his purse to get a bigger ring so he could hit and run
leonard would`nt have beaten hagler between 1980-1983 and i think he knew it

Why not?Goodnight, Irene wrote:Hagler (in 1983)?
It was being mooted as far back as 1981 after he Leonard beat Kalule, so why not 1983?
