Advice on getting into white collar boxing, please?

Me and a couple of mates were thinking of giving white collar boxing a try. I know theres a few guys on here like Damian Hucker who are involved in it. Anyone give me some information about it, please? Including people who have taken part or gone to watch an event and the type of thing i should expect.

Do you know of anyone local to you putting events on ? if so pm me with names and if i know them ill let you know who i think are descent people to do it with .

Not all gyms will allow you to train at them if they know its for white collar as some will be aba registered etc and may not want to get involved .

From the top of my head i cant think of anyone operating out of coventry but no doubt there will be someone , as far as nearby cities i know theres a few in birmingham , and theres 2 in leicestershire (better off in birmingham than leicester )

Can I do white collar if I've boxed as an amateur ?
Would like to give it a try, can you make money on ticket sales too ?

thanks birminghams only 15 mins away - what type of level are the fighters normally, and what type of fights are they usually. A friend went to an event and said they were wearing headguards and it was 3 rounds but i was under the impression it was without head guards.

Some use headguards , most dont .
On my own shows headguards are only used if one of the competitors is over 40 ,
Gloves vary from show to show , some use 10oz , some use 18s , again depends who you go with .

Level of fighters can vary but in theory you should be matched with someone of a similar experience and work from there .

In Birmingham Danger Defence seems a descent one , dont think he does a lot of shows , could be wrong but think he only does around 2 per year but suppose it gives longer time for everyone to be ready , so have a look for him on facebook , just search danger defence .

Nottingham isnt overly far if you ever fancy a run out on one of mine but if you want to make some descent money then being somewhere local where you can flog a few tickets is a lot easier .

Fighting Fit City Gym in Birmingham Centre is a pure White Collar gym. No meatheads. It is run by Neil Perkins

Very safety concious place which is good for the hobby boxer. You have to have full protection on to get in the ring, and recently I had an email which basically said you can only spar in certain gloves for safety reasons, and not use your sparring gloves for bag work. Shows they look after their members.

I was asked to fight at HW next month white collar in Brum for a mates night, but I'm recovering from an bike accident so this may just be too soon for me.

Neil's a good guy :TU:

Ive had a debate on the phone with neil in the past , he had a guy training with him who was in his early 50's and really terrible boxer but was desperate for a run out , so i got him on and found him a fair opponent so that it wasnt a walkover for anyone , but Neil decided to ring me telling me he had all sorts of medical conditions etc , so to be on the safe side the fella concerned went to get a drs note , which he had to pay for , stating he had no health problems and was fit to take up sport including boxing , this fella has now had 7 bouts , hes not won any but hes known on the circuit now so hes always matched very very softly ,hes also currently serving in afghanistan , so hes fit enough to fight for the country but neil didnt want him to fight for himself . maybe neil was just a bit concerned he would take a beating which is fair enough to be honest but the fact he blatantly lied to me was enough to not care for the bloke as a man , he could have just told me he was concerned if that was the case , if he had gone about it right the guy would probably have listened to him as its not as if i was really established at the time , if it wasnt for the guys determination to prove him wrong he wouldnt have been allowed to box on my show as neil had got me very concerned, it was his first fight and maybe would never have done one if it hadnt have gone the way it did , Neil came accross as very arrogant , he asked what my pro record was and when i replied i hadnt boxed pro he started going on about "well im a pro boxer and so is the guy who helps train the lads " so what !! am i supposed to bow down because your a pro , your just any other bloke to me pal .
Another point about fighting fit is ive been told by people who have trained there ,you have to sign up for a 6 month contract and they take your money regardless of wether you go to them or not , £30 per month if i remember rightly , for a couple of times a week , ok might be about normal i dont know but gyms in nottingham that are open 7 days per week are competitive with that price , so why pay a contracted price for a smaller open training schedule that wont release you prior to the 6 months .

Although i will say this is from about 3 years ago so may not be the same now , i wouldnt go as far as advising people to avoid him as i dont know his training methods etc etc but i would say dont go if your not going to be able to commit properly to the 6 months contract and if you dont want to be dictated to about where you can box by someone whos not even willing to be in your corner for a fight anyway .

Sorry to rant , ive never met the guy but thats what i know of him from telephone and what im told .

Best thing is to affiliate to an organisation rather than going it alone , as one of the hardest parts is getting the contacts for officials and matchmaking your lads , an organisation will help with that , For example as part of OIBA i was asked to matchmake for a new promotor at dinnington (near rotherham ) for his first show a few weeks back , i also refereed and helped with organising on the night , and someone else did the same in manchester a few months back for another guy who had joined OIBA .

For all thats good with OIBA though theres a real lack of a website , theyve had a couple that eventually disappear and in my view is the main reason it hasnt become bigger but in my view is as good an organisation as any and they dont charge the earth for meaningless licenses like some , they just vet everybody that signs up if theyve a boxing past and if not then they help to ensure everything is done the way OIBA expects a good show to be .

I forget the name of the organisation billy bessey is with but you wouldnt be far wrong getting involved with that lot too as that also looks well run .

Sometimes biggest isnt always best

Dont know who wrote that wiki but i dont know the guy and know its wrong , says he had 1 pro fight , which was in prizefighter , well he was 4-0 going into prizefighter , says he set up fighting fit after he retired yet it was before his last fight , could have been much earlier but i had already spoken to him before he was in prizefighter , i remember being pleased that he looked so crap in it.

Maybe the fact he has lost 7 justifies Neil's concerns, better safe than sorry right? Regarding the gym fee's. IMO it is a fair price for the timetable it offers, and a good portion of the members are barristers & solicitors etc.. so if they did not agree with the pricing I am sure they would make it known. Don't forget, this gym is in the centre of Brum so will not be cheap to rent. Most gyms now operate on a monthly tariff or their own security. My local ABA is £20pm, but late comers do not have the dedication to become an AM. White Collar was supposed to cater for the 'average man' to live the dream. Nowdays, many shows feature fully trained ex pro's as an easy payday. I cannot comment on any arrogance you encountered, but my own experience when I met Neil checking out some sparring was that he was a nice man. I have never walked into a gym where so many people randomly started talking to me. As far as White Collar in Birmingham goes in my experience it is the best for that market here. There is no danger of someone getting overmatched like I have seem in other Brum shows.

The fact hes had 7 (actually lost 6 drawn 1 but still not much difference) would never have been know had neil got his way as im talking about what was his first fight ,
I agree that i was a new promotor , the guy was turd and for all anyone knew i could have been setting him up for a beating , theres no way Neil could know that im not like that at that current time , so Yes i agree he could have been protecting him , but then he shouldnt have lied to me and started going on about all the "well im pro " crap , it was his arrogance that made me think eff him .

There seems to be a big difference between White Collar shows, depending on the organisation. The standard seems to range from absolute novice to something not far off ex-pros doing unlicenced eg IBA. I've had a couple of fights through the Real Fight Club. The first one I was a relative novice, the second one was over a year later after I'd had a lot more sparring with experienced lads doing regular IBA fights. The Real Fight Club was a good gym, but has been closed for ages now, it's supposed to be reopening in May. I spar regularly and wld probably be up for another bout but a big part of me can't be arsed with the stress!

Its just about getting funding at the moment mate , had a couple of potential backers that have amounted to nothing , as it stands i just save half of what i make on each unlicensed show , dont just want to go pro with the bare minimum i need for bond and licence as it in my view would be very difficult to make it work succesfully , i said from the start that i was aiming for 2013 to be the year i turn pro , im still on course for that but if something happens prior to that to make it happen then great :TU:

As soon as i apply for the license the boxrec faithful will be among the first to know ,

Ive even got an idea that will go along the lines of the boxrec british forum managing a fighter , wont go into it too much yet as ill reveal all at the appropriate time but the particular boxer has alreasy been spoken to about this , would be a good way for me to take in what the forum feel should be happening and a good way to feel involved in the career of a fighter .
