I think on this occasion cooney gets Bugner out of there quickly. The inactivity was hurting Bugner around this time as his loss to Shavers showed.

On the night proposed, I'd give the edge to Cooney. However this is less competitive prime vs prime. I'd bet on Bugner all things being even.

Shaver's punches caused Bugner's cut, not a clash of heads. Shavers was hurting Bugner that night.
I'd pick Cooney on points in that particular time frame.

Shavers is such an over-rated fighter. A total amateur by world-class standards.

A very silly thing to write. The likes of Larry Holmes, Jimmy Young, Joe Bugner and Ron Lyle would laugh in your face at such a suggestion, not that you'd ever say anything like that to an actual heavyweight boxer.

Don't you worry LG....GI will speak right up to both Larry and Earnie if/when the time comes. Let's just hope they both have sense enough to zip it, and be prepared to be educated, when he speaks...... truth to power.

Shavers TKO3 over Jimmy Young
Shavers D10 with Jimmy Young
Jimmy Young W12 over George Foreman

Thanks for proving to us you dont know ANYTHING about the Shavers-Young bouts beyond what BoxRec tells you, John L

Because boxers, as we know, are SUCH a credible and reliable source for these things traditionally, right?
Shavers is in his mid-60's. I doubt Id have reason to sweat sharing an opinion with him, and besides, it is a detraction of his Boxing ability, not an insult to his mother

He must on some level. I dont know what the similarity in my mind is precisely, but I just cannot ever distinguish Seamus and John L. I always remember one saying something and cant ID which of them it was, but there is something to these two which just blends them in my mind.

It takes some fornicating amateur to go 23 rounds with Larry Holmes, 15 with Muhammad Ali, come back to KO Tiger Williams in 10 (I would pay good money to see you go into a Philly gym and tell some old timers like Holmes that Tiger was another amateur), ice Jimmy Ellis and Kenny Norton in 1 round a piece, bash up Bugner in 2, crack the rock solid head of Henry Clark in 2 rds, and put Ron Lyle on the floor.
That sounds like the best 'amateur' I have ever heard of!

He was a gifted puncher...that was his SOLE equaliser.
If you would like me to pick apart some of the bouts you listed (as most, not all, arent what you are making them out to be), just ask.
And I did say he was an amateur by WORLD-CLASS standards. If youre going to reply with such conviction, read what I write.

Irene I would give it up mate, you've dug yourself a bigger hole than a roo when hes digging a dunnie for a crapper. Trust me Shavers even in his mid 60's would knock you from pillar to post. I've seen him in person recently a very big and intimidating man.
In terms of his actual in ring techniques shall we say, he never looked good but than the Klitchkos dont look good either. Shavers could fight from what I've seen and has a terrific resume over all types of world class foes from the HW golden era. That reveals there was a lot more to his technique than it might first appear.

The Klitschkos arent half as good as the respect they get. Especially Vitali.
Youre constant juvenile remarks about Australia are neither cutting or amusing, but then we've seen more than myself tell you that before, havent we.
Then again, dancing like Fred Astaire as you dodge the rain and text your reply, Im sure we can take that into account as you post cheerleading dross for anyone challenging me

Heres a multi-tasking for you to undertake --- watch Shavers and really observe him as you type here.

If Cooney had more opponents like Bugner before he fought Holmes he may have stood a better chance. Cooney was at that time the sort of fighter Bugner probably would have gone into survival mode against but I think he would have lasted the course and given Cooney some much needed rounds.
As regards Shavers being an amatuer by world class standards, his resume says otherwise, he could look ungainly and wild when tossing in the big right hand but was a fixture in the top 10 in the best era ever, that was no accident.

Your attempts to always be the shock jock aussie version of howard stern do you a disservice! Your making enemies with this behaviour like when u called Frank Bruno a coward LOL, and the comment implying u could handle earnie shavers now he is in his mid 60s threaten to make u a figure of fun although i admire your spunk!

You're (that's the correct term for referencing someone, not, "your," or don't they teach that at Oxford?) as usual lacking in comprehension. I said I had nothing to worry about from Shavers because he's in his 60's, i.e. his fighting days are over, not that I, "could handle him," or any such pointless bravado. Who the fuk Howard Stern is, I do not know, or care. I always remember what one gent said about making enemies...
"I have a reputation for being difficult...but only with stupid people." I disagree with plenty in here --- many I respect, plenty I dont. If you are deemed stupid, you shouldnt begrudge me for treating you so.
Back to cheerleading for anyone who disagrees with me. Lord knows I've dropped you like the witless, juvenile fool you are enough times in here for you to stop coming back for more directly.

man you need to get a life urinie instead of always playing the keyboard warrior and pub bore when it comes to correct grammar. Whoops did i spell that wrong?? Your obsession with the correct use of "you're" and "your" does make u sound like the pub bore you are, the Keith Miller of boxrec, always the know it all!

Do try and lighten up a little!

I am plenty light, I just honestly dont find your nursery school insults at all amusing, regardless of how little I think of your opinions. I mean, "urinie?" All the juvenile Aussie stereotypes? If youre going to be a dick, couldnt you at least be witty or clever about it?
Surely it isnt too much for a self-described Oxford alumni to make the 2nd-grade distinction between, 'your,' and, 'you're,' no?

Lord i never knew my going to Oxford could upset and enflame feelings of insecurity in a faceless person across the world!! Mate you are always making statements like "bruno was a coward"....." i could take Earnie Shavers now he is in his 60's"...."Earnie Shavers was an amateur at world level even though he took Jimmy Young and Norton and beat other notable contenders , gave Holmes life and death, took Ali 15 rounds"....its not for me to say who the dick here is.....anyway thats my last word on this!

OT: the funny thing is, even if one of you had somehow started this mutual love-in with some kind of ascendancy over the other, the internet's law of the lowest common denominator would have levelled the playing field a long, long time ago. to somewhere between plankton and dungflies.

Just because someone drops a load of much off at a major educational institution, does not mean that they gained knowledge.
I've been to Harvard.....many times. But G.I. still thinks I'm under edumacated.

Besides, everybody knows the smart people in England go to Cambridge . . . You'd think an Aussie like Irene would know that and cut mugabi some slack . . .
