I watched "Legendary Nights" last night, the episode on Hagler v Hearns.

Hearns apparently broke his right hand in the first round and we all know what happened 2 rounds later. It was awar whilst it lasted, but I wonder whether the fight would have had a different outcome had Hearns not broken his hand?

I don`t think it would. Hagler is my favourite fighter of all time. He was rock solid and just broke his opponents down with his workrate and not stop bombardment, plus he had a great chin.

Hagler would have knocked Hearns out regardless of the hand, but a great fight may have been even better had the hand stood up.

All time great first round - I picked Tommy to win ( my fave fighter, so heart over head ) but as soon as we saw him land his best on Hagler in the first, and Marv kept coming, you knew it was game over, broken hand or not.

I think the first round between Benn and Barklay was just as good, but I suppose it meant less because there was no special rivalry between the two beforehand. It was just a routine title fight for a meaningless bauble. Hagler didn't just win a belt by beating Hearns, he won major bragging rights.

There was another reason why Hearns fought the way he did that night. Manny Steward explained in an interview, that just before the fight, one of Tommy Hearn's friends had given Tommy a leg massage and apparently Tommy said to Steward " My legs don't feel right.......", saying that he felt sluggish. Steward basically said that the masssage had taken all the strength from Tommy's legs and he felt weaker, so that was one of the reasons he went out like he did because he didn't think he could last the distance.

That 'Legendary Nights' series was, well, legendary. Wasn't there talk about another series of it?

No, it was definately Hearns. I can put up the video link of the interview.

if it had carried on much longer hagler may have been stopped over that nasty cut on his forehead,he was covered in blood in the second and third,it must have been getting in his eyes

I think what really hampered Hearns was that terrible injury to his toe...

one of the great boxing quotes came at the end of the 2nd round the Ref Steele asked Hagler whether Hearns was still visible, Hagler retorted; "Well, I ain't missing him, am I?"
