A conspiracy and I suspect Greb was behind it.

He was supposed to but Mike McTigue ducked him. Tunney had a signed agreement to face McTigue for the title (and would have won easily) but McTigue fired his manager (who had obliged McTigue to the match). The NYSAC was in the process of forcing McTigue to honor the agreement when McTigue came down with a broken thumb (the same excuse he had been using for the better part of a year to avoid good fighters) and they allowed him time to "heal" from there on McTigue wasnt eager to fight any of the threatening top dogs. He really cheapened the title. If you look at his record the guy won the championship on a criminal gift decision from Siki (who was a pretty poor champ as well), He defended his title against a 20 year old Loughran twice, losing once with the other decision debated (despite what boxrec says), he defended against 18 year old Young Stribling twice being dominated both times (regardless of what McTigues hand picked crooked referee said), welterweight(!!) Mickey Walker who kicked his ass (footage of this bout was recently found and it shows the comically under sized Walker taking the fight to McTigue throughout.) In all of these bouts McTigue demanded that they be held in no-decision venues or that no decision be rendered before defending against Paul Berlenbach who himself wasnt exactly considered the most experienced or qualified LHW despite the esteem in which Rickard held him. Meanwhile guys like Gibbons, Greb, and Tunney were chasing McTigue with agreements to fight them to no avail.

I assure you, everyone on the east coast knew what was going on. And visual evidence is highly over rated.

Thanks Klompton for your serious response. Can this Walker film be viewed by a regular Joe...such as myself? I would give my glass eye to see it! Seeing Walker bounce McTigue would be highly entertaining.
