is that Pat 'Black Flash' Barrett? sorry I can't really help mate I just know the name from a fight poster in my local gym. Was Pat mustard then? Always thought his name sounded cool.

I managed to pick up most of his fights the other week. No photos though, sorry. Just an idea - What about some old copies of Boxing Monthly et al?

check out his fights if you get a chance, very powerful puncher. He should of got his title shot at light-welter, as he had true 1 punch KO power there. One of the best boxers never to of won a world title from these shores.

yeah most of Pats KO's were, that was a great win on away ground. I think at the time British boxers had been on a long losing run fighting for Euro titles in Italy.

Pat's fight with Racheed Lawal is an underrated classic nowhere to be found on the net. Lawal nails Barrett with a right hand in the first round which has the tall Manchester man out on his feet, really gone, but Pat instinctively avoids the Dane's follow-up punches and comes back with big shots of his own to win in round four.
Lawal was later stabbed to death working as a bouncer.

Loved watching him, but I think that's the old rose-tinted specs coming out a bit fella. He had one hell of a bang but never really proved he belonged at world level, so IMO can't be compared to the likes of Graham, Jones, Charnley etc.

We all have rose tinted glasses on when looking back at our favourite boxers, but i stand by what i said

If Pat had got his shot at Light-Welter he should of won a title. He's gone on record saying something was missing when he stepped up to welter for the WBO shot.

the champions in 1991 when Barrett was Euro champion were IBF Rafael Pineda, WBA Edwin Rosario, WBC Julio Cesar Chavez and WBO Greg Haugen/ Hector Camacho.

Now i'm not saying Pat would of beat Chavez even my glasses aren't that rose tinted. Pineda was a good boxer with a good chin, but beatable. Rosario was shot in 1991 IMO, and there for the taking. Haugen was tough as old boots but a come forward boxer, and wasn't a natural light-welter, beatable. Camacho would of frustrated the hell out of Pat, and probably won by UD.

I can remember Pat boxing. On his day, and when in the mood he could have beat just about anyone. If he weren't in the mood he wouldn't be able to beat anyone at the top level. He had a very good punch and was very fast and springy; he had a good style at Euro level but at top light welter level he would have been beat. The top men at 10 stone at the time would have done Manning Galloway in; I watched that bout and it was horrible.
