What if the great Alexis Arguello would've won the fourth world title in his fourth weight class against the formidable Aaron Pryor in that unforgettable night of November 12, 1982? What if he would have won the fight by KO in that same round (the 14th)?

That fight was so great I give Arguello about as much credit for losing as I would if he had won. Some fights truly have no losers.

Pryor certainly does get over-blown, though. Its pretty amusing to me hes the go-to guy for about 80% of fans when asked who the best JWW ever was.

He'd sure climb a couple of spots on my all time top 3000 p4p list.

Incredibly so, both hawks from that era are overrated and I was a big fan of Pryor and Jackson. They just seem to have struck a chord with a lot of fans as time goes by. In another 15 years I'll be reading how Hagler shamelessly ducked Pryor.

When I did the best fights of my lifetime, screw the decade, it was between this and Saad/Lopez 2. My lust for Saad made an impossible decision for me. Speaking of Saad, check this out.

I've heard the "greatest lighter weight" fighters conversation in the pub quite a few times, and I'm sorry to say that Alexis Arguello doesn't get the credit that he deserves... And on one occasion he was forgotten about entirely (even by myself - but in my defence I did think: We are forgetting someone".

That's because the average fan doesn't even know about the greatness of Arguello. Those who are true advocates of the sport, know about Arguello and have done sine he was in his prime., or even before that.

I'm only 26, but imagine what Sanchez-Arguello would have been like? Salvador was up for it, no doubt about it...

Arguello would be rated higher had he won,but he still had a remarkable career. He probably could have taken an easier route and won the Jr Welterweight title against the other champion, Leroy Haley.
However, he was more interested in the challenge of beating the best, Pryor. Arguello was one of the good guys of boxing.

yup. Sanchez - nelson the other obvious example that always comes to mind.

He belongs somewhere around #25.

Alp: You have him rated at #25 Even if he would have won his fourth world crown? I think if he would have beaten Pryor that night he would have been probably in the top 15 or maybe top 10. Right now, I have him rated at between #30 all-time...What a fighter he was. Thanks for your assessment.

Seriously, its at the point where Elmer could make a book outta his list and he'd have a market.

Even if Alexis Arguello managed to win the first bout with Aaron Pryor, it would have still taken too much out of him. As it is, I thought that Arguello was absolutely magnificant in the first bout, pushing a much stronger and younger fighter with tremendous stamina and an awesome workrate to the limit. But it was apparent that Arguello had took far too much punishment in the first bout and had very little left when fighting Pryor in a second bout, which Pryor won easily.

I assume he means that with a win over Pryor and with everything else in his career. Still top 10 or top 115 is pushing it. I do think Top 20 is legitimate had he won. Pryor was a great fighter.

I get he means that. Its still pretty rich.

God, does Pryor ever get over-rated. The guy is nowhere near what some proclaim him to be.

I think Pryor was a genuinely excellent boxer, and one of the better 140lbers in history...but there is NO WAY hes #1 all-time in that class, and people regularly tout him as such. They also talk about Arguello as though those were the only two bouts he ever had, refusing to acknowledge how weak the majority of his competition was.
